Question Presenter
Arielle What gives glass a malleable quality when it is in liquid form compared to solid?
Additionally, how does glass blowing work? Perhaps an in class experiment can come of this? Start with a falsifiable statement
Carmen How are glass and ceramics related?
What forces cause ceramic to crack when heated?
Is this related to shattering in glass?
Danny Why is glass clear if it is made from silica sand which is opaque?
How do you stain glass? Is glass clear or opaque when it is in it's molten state? Could you bring a video of molten glass to show?
Is it possible to re-shape or melt glass once it has cooled?
Is glass more likely to break if it is heated or cooled?
Di Can we paint ceramics without burning the color on?
what do we need to put in glass to make a touch screen as the iPhone's?
Devin What makes a Prince Rupert's drop behave the way it does? Please show a video
Gregory Is glass a liquid? Please define liquid
Lindsey Is glass made of different minerals that share components with different metals? Is that why glass has similar characteristics as metal?
Yvonne Will a bigger size ball bounce higher than a smaller ball?
Experimenting with different sizes and different materials, could we make them bounce at the same height when dropped from the same distance onto the same surface?
How does a glass ball bounce higher than a rubber ball?
Why does a ball bounce higher on concrete than wood?

Plan a Lab for Next Week

Let's see how acoustic resonance disturbs amorphous solids such as glass and ceramics. Do you think that you could break a glass with your voice? How would you do it? How shall we do it?

There is new research being conducted on friction and resonance. Let's plan another experiment to show how a violin bow "finds" the resonant frequency of various materials including steel strings, wine glasses and styrofoam.
