Hi Amanda,

Here is an update on "The Pink Mirror." Response to the class has been overwhelming: I received 40 hopeful inquiries beyond the 27 registered students. We may want to consider breaking this class into two sections the next time it's offered.

Last week we had a visitor from Caltech. Sangwan Lee[^1] is a postdoctoral scholar in Computation & Neural Systems. He presented his work visualizing brain activity. The students asked questions about making their own EEGs, how human brain-waves compare to other animals, and where love might be found in the brain, etc. These questions were asked with sincerity and eloquence and were answered them in kind. He stayed for 90 minutes in all.

Sangwan is looking for fresh approaches to the visualization of brain activity. He is working on an application for subjects undergoing an fMRI scan to interact with the activity in their own brains. The challenge is to present an interface that may complement brain activity. He came to CalArts for a critique of his current system (bar charts) and -hopefully- to find help to improve this interface. This is a good opportunity for a student or students to contribute substantively to a cutting-edge research project. I plan to take motivated students to Caltech for a visit to the lab.

This project may be a one-off, but it's another example of compatibility between CalArts and Caltech. Do you have any ideas on how you would like to expand this relationship?

Regards, -Doug
