Upon hire, most employees may elect to enroll in either the Annual Leave Program or Vacation/Sick Leave Program.

Employees in Bargaining Unit (BU) 1 can only switch to annual leave during open enrollments, which occurs each April.

Employees that are Excluded from a BU can enroll in Annual Leave anytime.

For both groups, once an employee enrolls in annual leave, they cannot change to vacation/sick for 24 months following their last date of election.

Vacation Leave

On the first day of the monthly pay period following the completion of six months qualifying pay periods, each eligible employee who is working full time shall be allowed 42 hours of credit for vacation with pay. Thereafter, for each additional qualifying pay period the employee shall receive credit for vacation with pay in accordance with the following schedules

Annual Leave

Annual Leave can be used to meet an employee's need for paid time off for any management-approved absence that is covered by sick leave or vacation. The advantages of annual leave are: (1) more discretionary leave each year (in lieu of sick leave), (2) annual leave has cash value upon retirement or separation from state service, (3) greater disability benefits in the event of a serious non-work-related injury or illness covered under Non-Industrial Disability Insurance by providing the option of replacing up to 100% of income by supplementation (4) there is not a six month waiting period - as soon as you accumulate hours, you can use them.
