How to play DoomWare - buu342/ACS-DoomWare GitHub Wiki

Playing DoomWare is easy, as the only thing you need is the latest DoomWare WAD. You can play it in both singleplayer and in multiplayer, with the option of playing solo in multiplayer available as well. If you want to play in singleplayer, it is recommended you either use bots, or play in solo mode. If using solo mode in singleplayer, type multiplayer into the console to allow respawning, otherwise the game will reset upon death (which is not the intended experience).

Controls

DoomWare uses the default Doom controls, but it's highly recommended to have jumping and freelook enabled. There are also DoomWare specific binds, which can be modified in the ESC menu:

Bind Default Key Bind Name
View Highscores I +dwscores
Observe Minigame O +dwobserve
DoomWare Menu P +dwmenu

Basic Mechanics

Players start their potentially short life in the main lobby:

The game starts proper once there are at least two players, or the game is initialized as a solo game.

After a very small intermission, the minigame starts, with the instructions presented on the center of the screen and (somtimes) a timer on the bottom. Players have a limited time to complete the task, being awarded with a single point upon successful completion. After another intermission, another minigame starts.

Some minigames allow players to rack up more points by killing other players or by finding (sometimes hidden) 1UP mushrooms:

After enough rounds go by, the game will speed up, which will increase the difficulty of the minigames and decrease the time between and during minigames.

After 25 rounds the game will end, with one player reigning victorious over the others. If there is a tie for first place, then special tiebreaker rounds will play for these players specifically until only one triumphs above all.

DoomWare has its own point system, and while only the player with the highest score can be seen on the top of the screen, you can use the built in highscore table to see where you are compared to other users. This can be accessed by pressing your View Highscore bind:

Wacky Modifiers

If you're lucky, at the start of a game, a wacky modifier will be rolled out. This modifier will change how all subsequent rounds in this game will play, potentially making it easier or harder for you to earn your sweet spot on the top of the scoreboard. A full list of Wacky Modifiers is available here.

Observing Minigames

Dying in DoomWare happens, a lot. But what do you do while you wait for the minigame to finish?

DoomWare has a built in observer camera system, which allows you to spectate the arena where players are competing from multiple angles. You can use this to learn interesting new strategies from other players as well! You can observe a minigame by pressing your Observe Minigame bind after dying in a minigame.

DoomWare Menu

DoomWare features a GUI menu that lets you learn more about the game, modify clientside options, and view your stats and achievements. The menu is opened on every player's first time playing DoomWare, and can be accessed at anytime by pressing your DoomWare Menu bind.
