Good management is a beautiful thing. In fact, we believe this is one of the most overlooked leverage points in the world and created the Manager Handbook.

Think of the teacher who influenced you the most as a child. Maybe they took you out of your shell and gave you a safe place to play and grow. Or maybe they cared enough to provide you with critical feedback that made you sit back, listen, and change your behavior. It is safe to say that you will never forget them; they changed your life.

Unfortunately, great managers are a slightly rarer species, but if you've ever owned one, you'll feel the same about them. Your supervisor can affect your life both positively and negatively. They can change the way you view the world, teach you to overcome obstacles, and hold a mirror so you can learn more about yourself. On the contrary, bad managers can make you hate your job and then, as is so often the case, everything else.

Our goal is to set a new standard for excellent management and to help as many people as possible to achieve it.

The essential manager's handbook

This book was written by Alex MacCaw with the help of the team at Clearbit, a San Francisco-based technology company. Clearbit was founded in 2014 with the intent to provide a vehicle for personal growth to everyone who works here. In mid-2018, our small, hyper-efficient 30-person team reached a turning point. The company started to grow rapidly and we have effectively tripled our team in about a year.

We saw effective management as a way to preserve the culture, values โ€‹โ€‹and happiness of our people during this period of extreme growth. We received a lot of training and help and were fortunate to work with teachers like The Conscious Leadership Group and Matt Mochary. We also learned a lot the hard way.

Why did we write this manual? This manual is based on the best of our collective administration's knowledge. We wrote it as part of Clearbit's internal management training program with the aim of developing top notch managers. When we realized that it would likely be useful to other organizations as well, we decided to publish it.

But we cannot credit this book. It does not contain any new ideas. We just picked them from among teachers and writers who influenced us. We have included links to his work throughout, and in some cases we have reprinted entire articles within chapters or in the appendix.

You will find that this guide is very specific to the administration in Clearbit. This is by design; We think that generalizing the content would only serve to water down the message. Not all of the tactics we have described apply to all companies, but this guide can influence your organization's approach to management.
