ACM & Notes

  • ACM 2013: ACM Model (for everyone to review).
    • "Baseline" for comparisons.
    • Do a quick skim to get a sense of the contents, especially the Core Tier-1 and Tier-2 Knowledge Areas (KAs).
      • The overall goals of ACM's core and recommendations are on Page 13
      • The Acronyms for the "Knowledge Areas" (KAs) is given on Page 14
        • See Core Hours in Knowledge Areas table on Page 37 for a quick summary of number of hours expected in each area. The CS2013 Tier1/Tier2 columns are the most relevant (there are older columns for the 2008 and 2001 guidelines).
        • Curricular Hours are expected to correspond to lecture hours (not necessarily lectures, but in-depth contact time that is focused on learning content; It doesn't include more "applying knowledge" time, like time spent in labs or on homework).
    • In addition to Body of Knowledge expertise, there are also guides about the characteristics that are expected. See Page 23 and the Professional Practice section on page 15
    • The "Total Core Hours" is 279-308 hours of content contact time (100% of Tier-1 and 80%-100% of Tier-2).
      • The current WashU Core classes, cse 131, 132, 240, 247, 332, and 347, represent about 227 hours (Assuming that 90% of time in a 14-week semester is spent on content). Some of the omitted hours are almost certainly covered in electives, but it's possible that not all students may be exposed to all of ACM's "core" to the same depth as the ACM curricula recommends.
