This article explains how to add various address formats of Bitcoin accounts in Ledger Live.

Bitcoin address formats

BTC addresses range from 27 to 34 alphanumeric characters with different beginnings of the addresses.

They can start with:

1 – these are so-called legacy addresses (P2PKH).
3 – these are so-called SegWit addresses (P2SH) and they are widely used.
bc1q – these are so-called Native SegWit addresses (P2WPKH) and they are widely used.
bc1p – these are so-called Taproot addresses (P2TR).

By default, Ledger Live will add a Native SegWit address when adding an account.

Add different address format for Bitcoin in Ledger Live

You can send your BTC from one format address to another without any problems. In rare cases, some exchanges may accept deposits only from a particular address format. In that case, you would need to add another address format in Ledger Live and send your BTC to this account and from there to the exchange.

Open Ledger Live.
Go to Accounts.
Click + Add account.
Select Bitcoin and click Continue.
Connect and unlock your Ledger device to your PC.
Open the Bitcoin app on your Ledger device.
Wait until all accounts will be scanned.
Click on a toggle next to Show all address types.
Select accounts with the address format you need.
Click Add account.

Your account should appear in the accounts tab now, you can distinguish different formats by a small tag next to the account.
