Ledger device freezing when attempting to sign an Ethereum or EVM-based message

When using your Ledger device to sign an Ethereum or EVM-based message, it will cause your Ledger device to freeze if you press the right button when presented with the “Press right to continue message. Double-press to skip”. If you’re facing this issue, ensure you’re using the latest version of the Ethereum app. 

This article will show you how to create your first Ethereum (ETH) account with your Ledger device and the Ledger Live app.

Before you start

• Download and install Ledger Live on your computer.
• Make sure your Ledger device runs the latest OS (firmware) version. 

Install the Ethereum (ETH) app on your Ledger device

1. Open Ledger Live and navigate to the ‘My Ledger‘ section.
2. Connect and unlock your Ledger device.
3. If asked, allow Ledger Live on your device.
4. Search for the Ethereum (ETH) app in the app catalog.
5. Click the Install button to install the app on your Ledger device.
   • Your Ledger device displays Processing.
   • Ledger Live displays Installed.

Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC)

Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC) represent two distinct networks. ETH is a very popular proof-of-stake (POS) network widely used for DeFi, smart contracts, ERC20 tokens, and NFTs. In contrast, ETC operates on a proof-of-work (POW) system and isn’t as commonly used. If you’re venturing into crypto and have Ethereum in mind, you likely want Ethereum (ETH).

Add an Ethereum (ETH) account to Ledger Live with your Ledger device

1. In Ledger Live, navigate to the Accounts section.

2. Click on +Add account, select Ethereum (ETH) from the drop-down menu, and then click on Continue.

    

3. When prompted, open the Ethereum app on your Ledger device using the buttons.

4. You’ll be given the option to name your account or go with the default name. Once everything looks good, click on ‘Add account‘ in Ledger Live.

5. Click on ‘Done‘ to finalize adding your account to Ledger Live.

   You’re all set, you can now navigate to your Ethereum account and use the ‘Receive‘ button to obtain and verify your Ethereum account address (also sometimes called a public key) with your Ledger device and use it to receive ETH coins, ERC20 tokens, and Ethereum NFTs in your Ledger account.

Advanced features

Enable blind signing

 Note that the name of the setting has changed from Contract data to Blind signing for clarity purposes. 

1. Connect and unlock your Ledger device.
2. Open the Ethereum application.
3. Press the right button to navigate to Settings. Then press both buttons to validate.
4. In the Blind signing settings, press both buttons to enable blind signing in transactions.  The device displays Enabled. 

Important note about enabling blind signing

• Enabling blind signing is an advanced feature that is only required for signing transactions involving smart contracts (e.g. swapping tokens via a decentralized exchange). 
• It’s recommended to disable blind signing after use.
• Please note that blind signing will be automatically disabled after a firmware update or after the Ethereum (ETH) app is updated.
• This can happen whenever the app is manually updated via My Ledger in Ledger Live or after a firmware update that requires apps to be reinstalled. You can re-enable blind signing as needed by using the instructions above.

Troubleshooting

Gas Usage

• Ethereum paid for your transactions is called Gas.
• Gas Price: Amount of Ethereum used per unit of Gas. This determines the speed of your transaction.
• Gas Limit: The maximum units of Gas you will pay. If this is set too low, your transaction can fail for running Out of Gas. Only the ETH worth of burnt gas will be deducted from your balance, the amount that was supposed to be sent remains in your account.

Auto verification not available message

When you enter an Ethereum address in Ledger Live that is entirely lower or upper case, the message ‘auto verification is not available for this address” will appear.

Note that Ethereum addresses are not case-sensitive.

Sent ETH to an Ethereum-based account such as Ethereum Classic

You can securely swap Ethereum (ETH) coins for other cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Solana (SOL), USDT Tether, XRP, Dogecoin (DOGE) and more, using the Swap feature in Ledger Live. As of December 2023, a minimum of 0.0285 ETH is required to initiate a swap transaction from your Ethereum (ETH) account.
