Background

Apartment/condo-style residence that does not have its own washer/dryer, water heater, garage, etc.

Problem

There are a lot of lists of recommended maintenance tasks for single-family homes, fewer specific to apartments/condos. Also a lot of these lists are kind of overwhelmingly long; it's helpful to make your own.

Approach

Helpful to have a set of knockoff Dyson vacuum attachments ($20) for a bunch of these things.

Monthly

  • Dishwasher: clean filter
  • Vacuum: clean filter
  • Air purifiers: clean filter
  • Vinyl windows: clean sill

Annual

January (new year)

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: test, check for expiration
  • Outlets: test GFCI outlets
  • Fire extinguishers: check pressure

April (spring cleaning)

  • Refrigerator: vacuum underneath
  • Oven: clean grease filter above range; clean inside oven; replace microwave charcoal filter

June (things that could be done whenever)

  • Bathrooms: Clean exhaust fans; check caulking around shower/tub for cracks
  • Kitchen: Check dishwasher stability; check caulking behind and around sink
  • All sinks: Clean faucet aerators

September (warm and dry)

  • Carpet: vacuum with more powerful corded canister vacuum (in addition to routine vacuuming with cordless); clean with steam cleaner
  • Door: check weatherstripping for cracks, check tightness of hardware, test doorbell; touch up paint

October (before cold and rain)

  • Baseboard heaters: vacuum all sides and underneath
  • Vinyl windows: make sure drain holes are clear; check caulking for cracks
  • AC window unit: cover
