Background
Fire extinguishers need to be visible so that people can quickly pick them up and use them.
Problem
In a home or small commercial space, it's common to store a fire extinguisher on the floor of a closet, pantry, or some other dark corner. This is not very visible, and somebody may move it while looking for something. This can make it hard to find in a hurry, especially for guests and visitors.
In the context where I learned about this, mounting fire extinguishers on walls was required by California fire code.
Approach
Mount each fire extinguisher on a wall at a comfortable height for people to grab it. You can check OSHA standards.
New fire extinguishers usually come with their own brackets, but if you're dealing with fire extinguishers that have been sitting on the floor for years, these types of little red brackets are easy to install and use:
- Two-prong hook for small (5-10 pound) extinguishers ($9 for 4)
- One-prong hook for larger (20 pound) extinguishers ($10 for 4)
Steps:
- Drill pilot holes of appropriate size
- Put in wall anchors if you want
- Install the bracket with screws
- Put the fire extinguisher on the bracket
Outcome
Admire shiny red fire extinguisher in a visible location.
Next steps
Look for any other fire extinguishers that sit on floors and mount them on walls.
