Elicitation Questions

Below are elicitation questions designed to clarify the specifics and boundaries of the project. These questions aim to eliminate ambiguity, prevent effort on unnecessary features, and ensure the final product aligns with customer needs.

1. Scope and Core Functionality

a. Definition of “Waste”

What categories of waste (e.g., plastic, paper, food, e‐waste) should the system track, and how detailed must the tracking be?

b. Feature Focus

Should the platform focus solely on waste reduction, or would you also like to include a carbon footprint estimation?

c. Waste Data Collection

How will users provide their waste data—manual entries, receipt scanning, barcode scanning, or other automated methods?

d. Data Validation

How important is it for the platform to verify the accuracy of user‐reported waste data, and what methods (e.g., peer review, photo evidence) should we consider?

2. Gamification and Challenges

a. Challenge Structure

Do you envision time‐based or goal‐based challenges? Should there be both individual and team challenges?

b. Gamification Elements

What types of gamification elements (e.g., streaks, badges, levels) should be included?

c. Difficulty Levels

Should there be different tiers (e.g., easy, moderate, advanced) for challenges, and if so, how should rewards change across these tiers?

d. Leaderboards

Do you want separate leaderboards for individuals and teams, and should these reset periodically (e.g., daily, monthly) to keep competition fresh?

e. Fraud Prevention

What mechanisms (reporting system, automated checks) should be in place to discourage or detect fraudulent challenge completions?

3. Rewards and Incentives

a. Types of Rewards

What forms of incentives make sense for your audience—digital badges, discount codes, merchandise, points for in‐app perks, etc.?

b. Distribution of Rewards

For team competitions, should rewards be shared equally or adjusted based on individual contribution?

c. Progress Tracking & Visualization

How would you like progress (toward goals and rewards) to be displayed—charts, progress bars, periodic summaries, or something else?

4. Community and Social Features

a. Tips & Eco‐Friendly Recommendations

Will the app provide its own tips and eco-friendly product suggestions, or should these be user‐generated? If both, how will they be moderated?

b. User‐Generated Content

Should users be able to upload resources (videos, blog posts, discussions) for others to learn from, and how will you handle moderation?

c. Social Interactions

Which social media features are important—forums, direct messaging, the ability to ‘follow’ users, or share achievements publicly?

d. Sharing & Referrals

Should users be able to share their progress or challenge completions on social media, and can they invite friends for bonus points or some kind of referral perks?

5. Platform Management & Extensions

a. Community Challenge Management

Who creates new challenges—admins only, or can users propose and vote on new challenge ideas?

b. Notifications & Engagement

How frequently do you want to notify users of new challenges, progress updates, or reminders (e.g., push notifications, emails, etc.)?

c. Inactive Users

Should the platform include ‘re‐engagement’ nudges (e.g., emails, app notifications) for users who have been inactive for a while?

d. Platform Accessibility

What accessibility features should be built in for visually or hearing‐impaired users and for older adults (e.g., large text, voice commands)?

e. Cross‐Platform Priorities

Are we emphasizing a mobile‐first design, or do you anticipate equal usage on desktop/web interfaces?

f. Avatars and Personalization

If users have avatars, should they be unlockable/reward‐based, and how central is this to the overall experience?
