SFS Docking Stations

Model 48 with SFS "Transformer" laptop dock

"Transformer" laptop dock features
dual touchscreens with MID installed
dual batteries with MID installed
10000 mah GAN charger/battery with limited passthrough mode
USB-C hub with 2 ports and HDMI and 100w power delivery
40mm fan modified with USB connector
3 port A type hub with available USB 3 plugged into USB-C hub
audio comes from MID itself
Internet connection comes from MID itself but could use USB ethernet

"Transformer" laptop dock development
partly inspired by the Asus Transformer laptops
but also it seemed natural to develop multimedia dock further and add a screen
USB-C monitors are too limiting as far as price/availability/connection options
7" or 10" waveshare USB monitor could be used
can use same GAN charger/battery and USB-C PD HDMI hub as multimedia dock
boot at power on enabled to remove need for power button in this confined area
touch configured on both screens
velcro mount for MID
MID screen used for communications and web browsing
wide screen used for gaming and document work
has essentially 2 batteries with the GAN charger battery and the MID battery
do not have the MID battery switched on with USB-C power delivery also connected
so to use the MID battery without further modifications it must be undocked first
the MID battery can be charged by an external charger when mid power switch is off

Model 44 with SFS Multimedia dock

Multimedia dock features
USB-C hub with 100w PD and HDMI out
10000 MAH GAN charger/battery with limited passthrough
120mm fan with USB connector

Model 44 and 48 size compared
model 44 is shorter and wider than model 48
the batteries make the difference
the narrower battery on model 48 allows cellular device to be on top of screen
delta 3 on model 48 is longer also so battery shape is complimentary

Power banks with Lattepanda Delta/Delta3
Mycharge adventure h20 turbo 10000 mah did not work
Mycharge hub turbo 10000 mah did not work
Anker 733 10k is more interesting
it does work with both usb-c ports
it charges with usb-c and wall power
but with basic 5v usb-c charging it does not provide passthrough
however it does provide passthrough with wall power
has the usual power interruptions when plugging and unplugging
but now at least it can be setup remotely and run until power fails

USB-C power delivery with Lattepanda
Anker 60w hub does work normally with Lattepanda without power delivery feature
Anker 60w hub does power type a ports without being connected to Lattepanda
Anker 60w hub does not power Lattepanda from powerbank even with second cable
Anker 60w hub does flash power light momentarily with Lattepanda power supply
plugging in the hub first or the power first makes no difference
does seem like it is not getting enough power
thus 60w hubs may not be the best choice
Belkin 4in1 100w works with Lattepanda with Lattepanda power supply
Belkin 4in1 100w works with Lattepanda with powerbank

Early charger shutdown
repurposing chargers to be full time power supplies comes with problems
one of them is the expected end of charge while the device is still running
one way to deal with this is to reduce charge current
the device will charge slower and be less likely to trip a shutdown threshold

Doing away with USB switch
can be confused with main power switch especially with dock with bad results
not needed to run on battery that is charging all the time with the dock
hibernation is used instead of sleep and main power switch will handle everything

Modular Camera

Integrating a camera directly to a built device is failure prone. The camera is one of the more electrically and physically frail devices and it when it fails it often means heavy device maintenance. Adding more than one camera to a device is even more precarious. There is also a subset of people who don't want a device with a camera at all or want more flexibility. This is where the modular camera comes in: a tiny USB camera board with the USB cable shortened and fixed directly to the board for convenience.

This device , hopefully one of many, promises to bring the dream of modular mobile components to reality. Just plug it in when needed and flex in any number of ways with a USB swivel adapter. When you are finished, it can be stored on your keychain for instance. Device is pictured beside a USB swivel adapter with a Bluetooth module plugged in for safekeeping.

The Modular Camera has been tested and works well with Kamerka, the KDE camera program.
