The drive unit motors are from Black & Decker GC1200 cordless drills. These are < $14 in cost, each. Hobby boat motors, with the gearbox, run at over twice that!.

Interestingly the motors are made by Johnson, but not Johnson Marine—Johnson Electric, an unrelated company.
