Installation

How to install Dungeon Train as a player — for singleplayer or LAN/multiplayer with friends.

For dev setup (cloning the repo, running the dev client), see Development instead.

What you need

Component Version Download
Minecraft 1.20.1 The official Minecraft launcher
Minecraft Forge 47.4.2 (or any 1.20.1 Forge) files.minecraftforge.net — 1.20.1
Valkyrien Skies 2 2.4.11 for Forge 1.20.1 Modrinth — Valkyrien Skies
Kotlin for Forge 4.11.0 or newer Modrinth — Kotlin for Forge
Dungeon Train latest — see Downloads Downloads wiki page (auto-updated) or GitHub Releases

All of the dependency mods are required on both client and server (and on every player joining over LAN).

Step-by-step

1. Install Minecraft 1.20.1

Launch the Minecraft launcher → Installations → New installation → set version to 1.20.1 → Create. Run it once so the version files are downloaded.

2. Install Forge 47.4.2

  1. Download the Installer from files.minecraftforge.net.
  2. Double-click the installer → choose Install client → OK.
  3. Back in the Minecraft launcher, a new Forge 1.20.1 installation will appear. Run it once so the Forge files initialise and create the mods/ folder.

3. Open your mods/ folder

OS Path
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods
Windows %appdata%\.minecraft\mods
Linux ~/.minecraft/mods

In the Minecraft launcher you can also click the folder icon next to the Forge 1.20.1 installation → Open game directory → then open the mods/ folder.

4. Drop in the three jars

Place all of these into mods/:

  • kotlinforforge-4.11.0-all.jar (or newer Kotlin for Forge build) — from Modrinth
  • valkyrienskies-120-2.4.11.jar — from Modrinth
  • dungeontrain-<version>.jar — from Downloads (always points at the latest release)

Cloth Config is bundled inside the Valkyrien Skies jar via Forge's JarInJar mechanism, so a vanilla Forge install does not need a separate Cloth Config download. If launch fails with Missing dependency: cloth_config, grab it from Modrinth — Cloth Config and drop it in mods/ too.

5. Launch

Pick the Forge 1.20.1 installation in the launcher and hit Play.

You should see all four mods listed under Mods on the title screen.

Playing on LAN

  1. One player opens a singleplayer world → Esc → Open to LAN → pick a port → Start LAN World.
  2. Other players on the same network open Minecraft → Multiplayer → Direct Connect → enter <host-ip>:<port>.
  3. Every player must have the same versions of Forge, Valkyrien Skies, Kotlin for Forge, and Dungeon Train installed — mismatched versions will refuse to connect.

Playing on a dedicated server

The same four jars go in the server's mods/ folder. Use the Forge 1.20.1 server installer from files.minecraftforge.net (choose Install server).

Troubleshooting

  • "Mod requires Forge 47.x" — your Forge install is the wrong version. Reinstall Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1.
  • "Missing dependency: valkyrienskies" — Valkyrien Skies jar isn't in mods/, or it's the wrong MC version. Make sure you downloaded the Forge 1.20.1 build of VS 2.4.11.
  • Crash on world load mentioning Kotlin / kotlinx — Kotlin for Forge is missing or out of date. Update to 4.11.0+.
  • Train doesn't move / collisions feel broken — see Compatibility for known Valkyrien Skies quirks.
