Project Overview: The Campus Guide

Navigating a university environment shouldn't feel like a gauntlet. Whether it’s sprinting between the SGW and Loyola campuses or trying to locate a specific lab tucked away on the fourth floor of a sprawling building, the "where" is often just as stressful as the "what."

The Campus Guide is a comprehensive navigation ecosystem designed specifically for the Concordia community. Unlike standard GPS applications that stop at the front door, this tool provides a seamless transition from city streets to interior hallways, ensuring that students, faculty, and visitors can focus on their work rather than their directions.

Purpose & Motivation

The motivation behind this project is simple: frictionless movement. Universities are complex, multi-site environments where time is the most valuable commodity. We identified three core challenges we wanted to solve:

  • The "Last Mile" Problem: Standard maps get you to the building, but they don't get you to the room. We are prioritizing Indoor Directions as our most critical feature, calculating the shortest paths between floors and highlighting accessible routes for students with disabilities.
  • Context-Aware Scheduling: Students shouldn't have to manually input destinations while rushing to class. By researching integrations with Google Calendar and the Concordia Open Data API, we aim to automate the navigation process based on a user’s specific schedule.
  • Campus Connectivity: With two campuses miles apart, the Concordia Shuttle is a lifeline. Our tool is designed to be time-aware and location-aware, helping users navigate the shuttle system effectively rather than just guessing when the next bus departs.

Core Features & Requirements

The project is built on a foundation of tiered navigation requirements:

Category Key Deliverables
Exploration Custom building shapes, campus-toggle functionality, and building-specific info pop-ups.
Outdoor Navigation Multi-modal transport support (Walk, Car, Transit) and integrated Shuttle Service tracking.
Smart Routing Automated "Next Class" directions via Calendar or University API integration.
Indoor Mapping (Critical) Floor-to-floor pathfinding, accessibility-focused routing, and POI markers (washrooms, elevators).
Lifestyle Proximity-based discovery for local restaurants and coffee shops.

Impacted Users

While the tool is built with a "student-first" mindset, its utility extends to the entire university ecosystem:

  • Students: New students can overcome the "freshman fog," while veterans can optimize their routes and find nearby study spots or services.
  • Students with Disabilities: By highlighting accessible routes and specific points of interest (elevators/ramps), the guide ensures the campus is navigable for everyone.
  • Faculty & Staff: Facilitates efficient movement between departmental meetings and different campuses without the need to cross-reference multiple schedules.
  • Visitors & Guests: Provides a professional, easy-to-use interface for guest speakers or prospective students who are unfamiliar with the urban layout.
