Tree Preview

Note: This page covers the preview step of the tree generation wizard. For complete documentation, see Visual Trees.

The tree preview step lets you verify your family tree layout before generating output. This is particularly useful for large trees (50+ people) where you want to confirm the layout looks correct.

Accessing the Preview

The preview is Step 5 in the Canvas/Excalidraw wizard flow:

  1. Open the tree wizard from Control Center → Visual Trees tab → New Tree
  2. Complete Steps 1-4 (Person, Tree Type, Output Format, Options)
  3. Step 5 shows the interactive preview

Preview Controls

Navigation

  • Mouse wheel: Zoom in/out
  • Click and drag: Pan around the preview
  • Zoom buttons: Fine-grained zoom control (+/-)
  • Zoom to fit: Reset view to show entire tree

Hover Tooltips

Hover over any node to see person details:

  • Full name
  • Birth and death dates (if available)
  • Generation number relative to root person

Preview Statistics

The preview step displays tree statistics:

  • Total people in tree
  • Number of generations
  • Edge count

When to Use Preview

  • Large trees: Verify layout before generating 50+ person outputs
  • Layout comparison: Test different algorithms (Standard, Compact, Timeline, Hourglass)
  • Research review: Visually verify relationships before finalizing
