Using the Names tab at knotfree - awootton/knotfreeiot GitHub Wiki

How to reserve an internet name[*] (aka Domain Name) with the .

Here's a link to this wiki.

Note: IOT devices that are accessed through knotfree only don't need to 'own' their name. They can just start using it.

Owning names through the knotfree.net app requires that an owners password and an access token are set up using the Tokens tab of the knotfree.net app.

Here's what it looks like:

Simply start typing the name you want. If you want an ".iot" name then click on that, eg. type "my-cool-new-iot-device-name".

It looks like this:

Note that it says "is available" and the ".iot" button is clicked.

When you are done click the SAVE button.

And, viola! You own the name.

It should look like this:

Advanced - Setting name attributes.

These are advanced DNS settings and you should probably have instructions from somewhere if you're not a DNS nerd (like me :-). Let's add an "address record"

Click the tiny down arrow in the center at the bottom. Then click "ADD TYPE". Type an "a" and see:

then confirm.

Now click the "ADD" button acrross from the "A" and fill in the dialog like this:

Confirm and then click "SAVE CHANGES". This will set up your domain to be handled by knotfree (which is another topic!)

Voilà!

[*] These are provisional names yet to be approved by the powers that be (ICANN). For now they only work with the knotfree DNS. Please sign the petition!
