"Jonathan,
We were finally able to sort out the money you had wired and are now able to begin making meaningful preparations for our expedition into the interior. I am now in the process of interviewing guides here in Merida, although that is posing some difficulty as we have still not been able to figure out exactly how long we’ll need to spend in the jungle.
Good news at last, however. Francisco de la Vega is more trouble than he’s worth, but he finally agreed to give us permission to cross his lands. Believe me that I, too had, fantasized about shooting him in the head. But it doesn’t look like that will be necessary now.
If all goes well, this will be my last letter before we depart. I will send a runner back to Merida as soon as the sight has been found to telegram you with the news. You will not hear from me again until then.
