Installing the Micro ultrasound system

Rode SmartLav+ Microphone. Focusrite Scarlett Solo Pre-amplifier/Soundcard. Rode VXLR. Rode SC3 TRRS to TRS adapter. Ā¼ā€ jack plug to phono cable. BNC to phono adapter. BNC to SMA cable. Micro ultrasound. Pulse Stretch Unit (also known as a PStretch). Connect active speaker to rear phono/RCA sockets. Female-female mini-jack adapter. Speaker (NOT SUPPLIED). Ultrasound Probe (also known as a Transducer).

Your Micro ultrasound system is image in the diagram.


  1. Install the Telemed Drivers and Telemed Echowave II software onto your PC.

    You can get the right versions on the USB drive that came in your ultrasound box.

    You can also get them at http://materials.articulateinstruments.com/EchoB-Micro-SonoSpeech/


  1. Connect an ultrasound probe to the front panel of the Micro.

    (this is image in the diagram)


(If your computer has USB3 ports then skip to step 4, below)

  1. If your computer has USB2 ports then connect the power supply provided to the Micro ultrasound system and switch it on.
Your Micro is provided with a medical grade power supply. Do not use any other supply!

  1. Connect the Micro to the PC using the USB cable provided.

    It must go straight into the PC or into a USB-C hub.

    Do not plug it into a hub that connects to the PC using USB-A.

    IF the USB forks into 2 ends then do not use the short power-only length of the cable. (Newer versions use a single USB cable that does not fork.)


  1. Run the Telemed Echowave II software as administrator.

    You should see a live image from the ultrasound probe.

    If not then try loading the drivers again.


  1. Close the Echowave II software.

  1. Run AAA.

All the above setup steps only need to be done once. If you now see a live image from the ultrasound probe in AAA then setup of your ultrasound system is complete!

From now on, you only need to run AAA.


Connecting Audio

  1. Install the Focusrite Scarlett Solo drivers.

    You can get the latest version from the Focusrite website.

    Make sure you use the drivers for the Generation that matches your Scarlett Solo.

If Windows crashes with a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) when you attach the Focusrite, this is likely caused by McAfee antivirus.

Focusrite provide guidance on how to resolve this. Please read this webpage.

  1. Connect the "Frame Strobe" port on the Micro to the "Sync IN" plug on the PStretch, using the BNC to SMA cable. This is part image in the diagram.

  1. Connect the PStretch "OUT Sync" port to the Focusrite Scarlett Solo's channel 2 using the ¼" Jack-Phono cable and the BNC-Phono adapter. This uses parts image and image in the diagram.

*** 4. **Connect the PStretch to your PC** using the black cable that comes out of the PStretch. (This is only used to provide power.)
  1. Turn on the 48V Phantom Power by pressing the ā€œ48Vā€ button below the left dial on the Focusrite.

    It should light up red when successfully switched on.

  1. Connect some speakers to the Focusrite using the Line Outputs on the back.

    You may need to buy speakers if you do not have any.

  1. On your PC, set the playback device to ā€œFocusriteā€ / ā€œScarlett Soloā€.

    In Windows 10, you can do this by opening the Start Menu and searching for ā€œSound output device propertiesā€. Use the drop-down menu at the top to choose the ā€œFocusriteā€ / ā€œScarlett Soloā€.

  1. On the Focusrite, set Direct Monitor to OFF.
    On the Focusrite generation 2 this is a switch as shown below.
    On the Focusrite generation 3 it is a button called "Direct Monitor" which is dark when off and illuminated when on.
    On the Focusrite generation 4 it is a button called "Direct" which is illuminated white when off, and illuminated green when on.

  1. On the Focusrite, turn the large monitor dial to approximately 2 o'clock.
    On the Focusrite generation 2 and 3, this is called "MONITOR".
    On the Focusrite generation 4 this is called "Output".

You must use an external soundcard such as the Focusrite Scarlett Solo. If you use your PC’s internal soundcard then AAA cannot synchronise any data recorded like that. It causes dropped audio samples while Windows switches from recording with the Scarlett to playing back with the onboard soundcard.
When AAA records data it automatically synchronises it with the recorded audio. It records a line-level microphone signal on one audio channel and an ultrasound synchronisation signal on the other channel. The sync signal (aka. ā€œframe strobeā€ signal) comes from the rightmost gold connector on the rear of the Micro. You need a Pulse Stretch (aka. "PStretch") or else your PC can't see the sync signal. The PStretch output signal is line level audio, so you must amplify the microphone signal to line level. You must provide a microphone and preamp to do this. You also need an audio capture card (a soundcard). You must connect the amplified microphone signal and the stretched ā€œframe strobeā€ signal to the stereo line-level inputs on it. The VXLR adapter converts the Focusrite Scarlett Solo’s 48V phantom power to lower level consumer phantom power. This powers the Rode SmartLav+ when the SC3 adapter cable is used.
If you don’t want to use the Focusrite, you can use your own soundcard and pre-amp instead. However, if you use your own hardware then we may not be able to help you if you have problems.


Once your hardware is all set up, the next step is to install AAA.
