this is a tutorial showing how to measure tongue tip movement or movement of the root of the tongue using fiducial splines to measure along a single axis so here we have some data that has already been splined tongue splined if we're going to edit splines and we're going to add the new fiducial measurement splines so click new spline and click fiducial spline and you can see here we've got an orange line i'm going to make a little thicker so it's easier to see and i'm going to color it orange in this case now we could start this at the origin of the fan and measure up and right up to the extent the maximum extent of the tongue movement or we could use an anatomical point we can use this point here which is the base of the sharp tendon where it attaches to the mandible and that's where the genioglossus muscle attaches so that's where the actual muscle fibers that control the shape of the tongue are constricted from we'll use that in this instance we'll change this to fid tip so we know what it's measuring and then we'll create another one for this your line thicken that line up we'll color this one pink and we'll change the name of this one to fit root and again we'll move the base of this now this is where the origin is or the zero point and you can tell that because there's a little dotted line that comes out from that point and we'll measure say along here to measure the root movement okay so we can save and close now and we want to now we want to create some analysis values based on these so if we go into edit charts we've got edit charts and then in here we'll do edit analysis values we're going to create two spline values and this one's going to be tip dist and we pick 2d spline we're just going to measure the position along that spline now it's the fiducial we want to use for this is fid tip and it's going to measure where it crosses the tongue spline spline a so you can see this little diagram here and we want to do that again so i'll create a spline for root dist and again select 2d spline position tongue and this time we'll measure it along fid root okay so now up here we've got root distance tip discs and to make it clear what's what we're going to change the colour going to line and we'd coloured the root pink so i'll use that and the tip orange so we'll use that and i'll just make these lines a little bit thicker okay so here if i select both of these use a common axis and plot them both together here we can see the movement of the the tongue up and down here the tips moving up and down and up and so you can see the movement moving along here now you may find that these lines are a little bit noisy and what you can do is to create a smooth version of these tracks in using a maths analysis value and this will be the subject of another presentation
