Numbering & Mecha Generations - apolli-xi/ttoc-mecha GitHub Wiki
Numbering System:
Okay, so I know our numbers can be a little difficult to make sense of, but I tried to base it off the issues they have in real life when numbering sequential equipment pieces (like in railways etc).
Generations:
Generation 0:
Generation 0 mecha are the roughest, most thrown-together pieces of hardware imaginable. They were the immediate, knee-jerk reaction from the Humans to the arrival of the Kaiju, and as such, were very dangerous for their pilots. The strain on the pilot from interfacing with these mechs caused devastating mental trauma and damage, and due to this, no Generation 0 pilots remain in service today.
These mecha are designated with the prefix 0-, and were all experimental.
Generation 1:
The first generation of true Mecha, Generation 1 was the real genesis of the design process used for all subsequent generations. Gen 1 Mechs are tall, hefty, and strong. Pilots from this generation still suffer from the trauma caused by bonding with the machines, and by the time our story takes place, have been fighting this war for a long time. They're experienced, but any still piloting Mecha are definitely struggling from the strain & effects of such a long time melding with the technology.
These mecha are designated with the prefix 1-, and are now rare. Only four are known to still survive, with a couple more left Missing in Action
after engaging Kaiju 1:1.
Generation 2:
This generation was designed with the lessons learned from Generation 1, and are mostly support Mecha, designed to support other Mecha and civilian forces.
The generation is typically shorter, with the exception of 2-0000 Shattercast
, which was built on a frame originally designed to replace the aging 1-0010 Ultra Magnus
, before Magnus' pilot Ambus Hammer retired. As such, 2-000
doesn't show much of the same signatures as this series.
Designed in part by Apolli Nix of the Repair & Engineering Crew, these Mech were designed & built during the transitional period as the TTFC became more public, and the United Nations began to take notice, eventually taking control of the wayward program with the installation of Ambus Hammer as Brigadier General. As such, many of the 2nd Generation Mecha implement Harm Reduction Technology for their Pilots.
These mecha are designated with the prefix 2-, and are also relatively rare. Despite their design improvements on the original mecha, they suffered from a lack of power due to their Fissile fuelled cores to run the upgrades, and were able to be overwhelmed by the Kaiju when not operating as part of a team with ease.
Generation 3:
The first fleet of Mecha where design was consulted with Pilots start-to-finish, Ambus Magnus commissioned newly reinstated Commander Apolli Nix, Chief of ERD (Engineering, Repair, & Design) to draw up plans for a new Generation of Mecha, fully funded and authorised by the UN. As such, Apolli worked with the UN's chief Nuclear Scientist, Dr Shockwave, to develop the first viable Fusion cores to power these Mecha. This Generation were the first mechs to feature, from-new, the extensive cooling systems for these fusion cores, giving the Mecha their very noticeable signature - Neon-bright Biolights all over the limbs, allowing the coolant (a compound called "Energon" by Shockwave) to exchange heat with the air without emitting radiation.
These new cores & cooling systems would later be retrofitted to all existing Mecha, resolving the power issues caused by the earlier cores and reducing the risk for catastrophic failures.
With this generation, the TTFC started to win. The advanced mecha designed here were so far beyond what had come before that the Kaiju were utterly unprepared. For two years, with Generation 3 & 4 mecha being built quicker than they could fall, the Planet knew safety. Knew relative Peace.
These mecha are designated with the prefix 3-, and are the most common generation, mass-produced as they were. Any black-market Mecha parts would come from this generation due to the prolificity of the Mecha, and are viewed by most pilots as reliable, safe Mecha - Machines to count on.
Generation 3.5 (Seekers):
Generation 3.5 Seekers were an iterative development on the Generation 3 design, featuring all the benefits of the previous two generations, and Apolli's newest development - self-contained flight technology.
The armouring on these Mecha are lighter than typical, to ensure the thrusters can manage to lift the massive machines off the ground, and they feature deployable wings/airbrakes.
Very expensive to build due to the high number of very specialised components.
They are organised into Air Wings, such as the one located at Shatterdome Alpha, under the command of Alyona Valieva. Other wings include New York State, California State, and Nevada State.
Generation 4:
The newest Mecha designed & built by TTFC, these units are more generalised, and require less tailoring and alterations to be moved between pilots. They're also the first generation where there was no requirement for pilots to undergo the incredibly invasive & dangerous surgery previously required to allow them to pilot the mecha.
These mecha are designated with the prefix 4-, and are the second-most common generation. They're the newest of the new, and also smaller than previous generations thanks to further advances in the technology used.
