Creating Rituals - apexevolved/site GitHub Wiki

Rituals come in many forms. It could be anything from flipping a coin to spending two days dancing naked in the moonlight and the effects are just as varied as the action you must make to create them. The the level of complexity and the length of time required depend on the effect you wish to create. Dots purchased on rituals weather they be an new ritual or an existing one cannot exceed the dot you have in that rituals discipline. Appropriate dots in either the Mentor or Ancient Knowledge merits might also act as a substitution for dot in said discipline.

Creating A Ritual

When designing a ritual the player decides what effects just like when she is using an active power by way of the Use of Powers table except duration cost is ignored unless its effects are permanent when the ritual has to be Weaved as the cost of that effect. Passive Powers can also be used to create similar effects when creating rituals. The have a range of 10 dot/steps that can be used to describe them and a ritual cannot be created with more dots than number the highest of dots a player or players may have in occult. For each dot/step used in its creation it increases the time taken to complete it by one duration step. The cost may be reduced taking conditions with the ritual by one dot for each reduction. cumulative rolls can be made to create greater effects.

Time to complete ritual Dots/Steps
Move Equivalent Action 0
1 min/6 rounds 1
1 scene/hour 2
24 hours 3
2 days 4
1 week 5
1/2 dots weeks RU 6+

Example: Corra the witch is creating a spell that will protect her home from being entered for the next month. She uses her power over temperature to make her ritual create an ice sphere around her home that only lets her in or out during that time. She wants it to make her size 28 home impervious to up to aggravated damage. That takes 3 steps to achieve and with the condition she must be present during the ritual making the cost of the ritual 2 dots and the time to cast it take 24 hours. She may laten then chooses to Weave the ritual so that its effects can be permanent at the cost of 1 pont of her G,M,S.

Performing a Ritual

First a player need to determine the source of the rituals power. If the player chooses their G,M,S the point spent of a player G,M,S or willpower to perform a ritual just activates the event. A player may also choose to let a god or higher being be the source but doing so increases the duration time to complete by a minute per dot. The die pool used to perform or create a ritual is determined by a players dots in occult + G,M,S + relevant Power if applicable. The player must remain in the area where the ritual is being performed. If the ritual user is forced to move they must start the ritual over.

Weave

To Weave a Discipline is to take a small part of oneself or another and sacrifice it in order to weave its effects into the Tapestry itself. When a ritualist wants to make a discipline they have created usable by others she must first weave it. Weaving a Ritual requires a roll equal to Occult + G,M,S + relevant power if applicable, and costs one dot of her G,M,S or a meaningful sacrifice. If the attempt fails the point of her G,M,S is lost. On a critical failure the weave succeeds but with a curse attached to it. The effects of this curse are determined by the storyteller. Only one Discipline can be weaved every 24 hours.

Cost

Ranks in the Ritualist Merit cost 2 x dots. Each dot bought this way allows the player to learn one ritual of the appropriate rank. Additional Rituals are bought at a cost of 2 x rank of ritual. The player can only buy Rituals whose rank is equal to or lesser than the number of dots they possess in the Ritualist Merit. If a player somehow gains a ritual that has a rank higher than their dots in Ritualist, they are unable to use it until they possess the required ranks.
