On the next page some key concepts of this work are defined.

Pain

Acording to the IASP, pain is defined as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage" [1]

Nociception

Acording to the IASP, nociception is defined as "the detection, transduction and transmission of the painful stimulus that produces an autonomous response in the patient despite being unconscious". [1]

General anesthesia

General anesthesia is a form of anesthesia used to keep a patient completely unconscious and pain-free during surgery or other invasive medical procedures. During general anesthesia, the patient receives medications intravenously and/or by inhalation of anesthetic gases that produce a temporary loss of consciousness and protect the body from the physiological stress response that the procedure can cause.

Nociception monitors

The nociception monitors are to devices or equipment designed to measure and monitor nociception in the human body. The nociceptions monitors that Irene has been working with are the following: CONOX,qCO,ANI and Algiscan.

CONOX

CONOX is a non-invasive monitor that is used in surgery rooms during anaesthesia and sedation procedures. CONOX records the patient’s electrocardiogram. It analyses the data to obtain two indices:

  1. qCON, which indicates the patient’s consciousness level,
  2. qNOX, which works as a guide to know the patient’s probability of response to a noxious stimuli

qCO

qcO is a non-invasive cardiac output monitor used in every area of the hospital. The qCO device computes different indices: Heart Rate Variability and electrocardiogram signals. These indices must be interpreted by a doctor, as the company does not establish a clinical state range.

ANI

Analgesia Nociception Index (ANI) has been proposed for the assessment of acute nociception and pain. The index is based on ECG.

Algiscan

The Algiscan monitor uses pupilometer technology for the measurement of the pupillary dilation reflex to evaluate the patient’s level of analgesia during a surgery.
