The Sound Production System

The Breath System

The breath system is how humans take in air through nose and mouth (inhalation) and release air through nose and mouth (exhalation).

Material for Speech Sound

The air (వాయువు) that comes from the lungs is the raw material for speech sounds. This same air that we breathe becomes the medium for producing all letters and sounds when we speak.

Material for speech sound

Larynx (Voice Box)

The larynx (స్వర పేటిక) is located where the air passage begins.

Inside the larynx are the vocal cords (నాద తంత్రులు) — two small strips attached on both sides of the air passage.

Function of Vocal Cords

During normal breathing, the vocal cords stay open and relaxed. But during speech, they become active and tight.

When a person decides to speak, air pressure builds up, and the vocal cords begin to vibrate.

Sound Production

For certain letters, the vocal cords open, block the air passage, and vibrate. This makes the passage narrow.

Then the outgoing breath creates sound during speech in a specific way, depending on how it emerges.

These types of letters are called nādātmakamulu (sound-based letters):

Oral Sounds

For certain other sounds, the distinction between voiced (ఘోష) and voiceless (అఘోష) is determined by whether the vocal cords create blockage or not.

When producing speech sounds, this is the first effort a person makes.

Inside the Mouth Region

Initially, there was a junction called the epiglottis inside the mouth area where sound begins to take shape.

(Beyond the orbit of the mouth) అని అర్థము.

This is called the pharynx (గొంతు చెతకను). "Beyond the orbit of the mouth" doesn't mean completely outside — it's still connected to the mouth area.

Epiglottis (ఎపిగ్లోటిస్): A flap of tissue that normally covers the windpipe during swallowing to prevent food from entering the lungs. During speech, it stays open to allow air flow.

Pharynx (గొంతు చెతకను / ఫారింక్స్): The throat cavity behind the mouth and nasal cavity — acts as a resonating chamber for sound.

After the Epiglottis (Path to Pharynx)

After the throat, air enters the epiglottis and then the pharynx. From the pharynx, there are two paths:

  1. One to the mouth (ముఖమందలము)
  2. One to the nose (నాసామందలము)

Now, depending on which path the sound takes, letters are classified as:

  • Anunāsika (అనునాసిక) — non-nasal sounds (through mouth only)
  • Anunāsika cetevū (అనునాసిక చేతేవ్) — nasal sounds (through nose)

  • For non-nasal sounds: The nose passage closes completely, forcing all air through the mouth
  • For nasal sounds: The nose passage opens, allowing air to flow through both nose and mouth

Therefore, nasal pronunciation happens when sound emerges from both the nose and mouth passages together — this is emphasized in traditional texts.

Places of Articulation

Sounds are distinguished by subtle differences. These differences happen inside the mouth. The specific effort made in the mouth to shape sounds is called sthāna prayatna (స్థాన ప్రయత్నము).

Inside the mouth, from the throat forward, there are specific regions (parts) where different sounds are produced. These regions (వందలములు) determine which sound is produced.

The Five Places (పంచ వర్ణ వ్య్యస్థానములు)

Five main Places of Articulation (స్థానములు):

# Place Telugu Location Sounds Produced
1 Throat కంఠము (kaṇṭha) Back of throat క ఖ గ ఘ ఙ అ ఆ హ
2 Palate తాలువు (tāluvu) Hard palate (roof of mouth) చ ఛ జ ఝ ఞ య శ
3 Roof మూర్ధా (mūrdhā) Retroflex region (curved back part) ట ఠ డ ఢ ణ ర ష
4 Teeth దంతమూలము (danta mūlamu) Base of teeth త థ ద ధ న ల స
5 Lips ఓష్ఠములు (oṣṭhamulu) Both lips ప ఫ బ భ మ వ

These five regions are called the Places of Articulation. Within these five places, the first thing that contacts or approaches is called the Articulator (కరణము).

Articulators (Active Parts)

The tongue (నాలుక), with its front, middle, and back parts, is the primary articulator.

The tongue creates the sounds of:

  • Back of tongue (జిహ్వ మూలభాగము) touches the throat for guttural sounds
  • Middle of tongue (మధ్యభాగము) touches the palate for palatal sounds

Classification by Production Method

The passage continues describing the 25 consonants (5×5=25) organized into groups, and explains two main categories:

(Antasthāmulu) — Semi-vowels

The four semi-vowels య ర ల వ (y r l v) are called antasthāmulu.

In pronouncing these, there is only slight contact between the articulator and the place of articulation.

The four sibilants/fricatives శ ష స హ (ś ṣ s h) are called ūṣmavamulu.

In pronouncing these, there is NO contact — only air friction.

Conclusion

The వర్ణోత్పత్తి క్రమము describes the complete scientific process of how sounds are produced in Sanskrit/Telugu:

  1. Air from lungs → creates pressure
  2. Vocal cords vibrate → creates basic sound (nāda)
  3. Pharynx splits → to mouth and/or nose
  4. Articulators shape → at 5 specific places
  5. Final sound emerges → as specific varṇa

This systematic understanding forms the foundation of Pāṇini's phonetic science and is essential for correct pronunciation, sandhi rules, and understanding the structure of Sanskrit grammar.

The scientific order of sound production in Sanskrit grammar

Visarga Uccāraṇa (Echo-Vowel / itvam) and “Pūrvānāntara-sthānaḥ Visarjanīyaḥ”

This note captures the pronunciation side (ఉచ్చారణ) of visarga (ः) as heard in traditional recitation—i.e., visarga realized as h + echo of the preceding vowel—and connects it to the conceptual rule “pūrvānāntara-sthānaḥ visarjanīyaḥ.”

Examples from the Uploaded Image (Corrected Reading)

Left: lexical form with visarga (ः)
Right: pronunciation with echo-vowel (+ h) in recitation (itvam)

హరి: → హరిహి (hariḥ → harihi)
రామ: → రామహ (rāmaḥ → rāmaha)
శంభు: → శంభుహు (śambhuḥ → śambhuhu)
హరే: → హరేహే (hareḥ → harehe)

Principle

“पूर्वानन्तरस्थानः विसर्जनीयः” (pūrvān-antara-sthānaḥ visarjanīyaḥ)

The visarjanīya (ः) is produced at (or follows) the articulatory place/quality implied by the preceding sound.
In recitation, this is heard as a light ‘h’ plus the echo of the preceding vowel at pause (end of pada/utterance).

Quick Reference: Echo-Vowel Uccāraṇa at Pause

aḥ → aha
āḥ → āhā
iḥ → ihi
īḥ → īhī
uḥ → uhu
ūḥ → ūhū
eḥ → ehe
aiḥ → aihi
oḥ → oho
auḥ → auho

Applied to your words:

hariḥ → harihi
rāmaḥ → rāmaha
śambhuḥ → śambhuhu
hareḥ → harehe

Visarga: Pause vs. Across-Word Sandhi (At a Glance)

  • At pause (uccāraṇa/itvam):
Visarga is voiced as h + echo vowel → hariḥ → harihi, rāmaḥ → rāmaha.

  • Across word-boundaries (external sandhi):
Behavior depends on the following sound (not the focus of the image, but useful context):

    • Before ka/kh → jihvāmūlīya (a velar breath)
    • Before pa/ph → upadhmānīya (a bilabial breath)
    • Before voiced sounds/vowels → may become r/s or undergo other changes per sandhi rules
    • At full stop/pause → tends to the echo-vowel pronunciation above
