This is chapter one of https://ia601808.us.archive.org/11/items/Samskruta-Kumara-Vyakaranamu There are three swaraas (vowels) and 33 vyañjanaas (consonants) in the Māheshvarā Sutras, arranged in 14 sutras. Each sutra ends with a marker consonant that indicates the end of a group of sounds. The groups are as follows:
- అ ఇ ఉ ణ్
- ఋ ఌ క్
- ఏ ఓ ఙ్
- ఐ ఔ చ్
- హ య వ ర ట్
- ల ణ్
- ఞ మ ఙ ణ న మ్

- ఘ ఢ ధ ష్
- జ బ గ డ ద శ్
- ఖ ఫ ఛ ఠ థ చ ట త వ్
- క ప య్
- శ ష స ర్
- హల్
- There are 9 vowels and 42 consonants.
- అచ్ - అ ఇ ఉ ఋ ఌ ఏ ఓ ఐ ఔ are the nine - 9 vowels are called achulu.
- అ ఇ ఉ ఋ ఌ - simple vowels and ఏ ఓ ఐ ఔ are Diphthongs
- ణ్ క్ ఙ్ are 3 ఇత్ sangnyas [technical term / name] that are absorbed by 9 vowels.
- అణ్ pratyaharamu - అ ఇ ఉ are the 3 vowels
- అక్ pratyaharamu - అ ఇ ఉ ఋ ఌ are the 5 vowels
- హల్ pratyaharamu - హ through ల్ are the 33 varnas [sounds] are called hallulu.
- ట్ ణ్ మ్ ఞ్ ష్ శ్ వ్ య్ ర్ are 9 ఇత్ sangnyas [technical term / name] that are absorbed by 33 varnas.
- అచ్ and హల్ varnas together form 2 main segments of of sanskrit language system.

*Samakharamu and Savarnamu First 4 Samakharamas each of them can be represented in 18 ways forming savarnas. Example: అ hrasva with its [long vowel (dhherghamu), pluthamu, udhathamu ] X [ anudhathamu, anunasikamu, anaanunasikamu ] [3 X 3 X 2] = 18 same applies to ఇ ఉ ఋ but for ఌ dhherghamu doesnt apply hence only [pluthamu, udhathamu] X [ anudhathamu, anunasikamu, anaanunasikamu ] [2 X 3 X 2] = 12 Similarly sandhyakharamulu doesnt have hrasvas hence 2 X 3 X 2 = 12 In written format we dont see all these variations we only see అ kaara and other 4 harsva dheeragamulu
These are consonants written without a vowel marker — the bare consonant form with a halanta/virama (్).
Examples:
- క్ ఖ్ గ్ ఘ్ ఙ్
- చ్ ఛ్ జ్ ఝ్ ఞ్
- ట్ ఠ్ డ్ ఢ్ ణ్
These are called "phuṭṭa" (split/bare) because they stand alone without being joined to a vowel.
In Telugu writing:
- క = ka (consonant + inherent vowel అ)
- క్ = k (bare consonant, phuṭṭākṣara)
These are conjunct consonants — two or more consonants combined into a single cluster, like:
Examples:
- ర్త (rta) — as in భారతము (bhāratamu)
- స్త (sta) — as in అస్త్రము (astramu)
- న్న (nna) — as in అన్నము (annamu)
They're called "sandhyā" (junction/twilight) because they represent the meeting point of two consonants — neither fully separate nor fully merged, like twilight between day and night.
## Comparison| Type | Telugu Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bare consonant | ఫుట్టక్షరము | Consonant without vowel | క్ ప్ త్ |
| Conjunct consonant | సంధ్యాక్షరము | Two+ consonants joined | క్క ప్త స్త్ర |
| Full consonant | పూర్ణాక్షరము | Consonant + vowel | క కా కి |
In the Māheshvarā Sūtras context:
- The IT markers (ణ్ క్ ఙ్ చ్ etc.) are phuṭṭākṣaramulu — bare consonants
- When forming pratyāhāras, you combine the first sound with these bare consonants
Example:
- అచ్ = అ (first vowel) + చ్ (IT marker phuṭṭākṣara) = all vowels from అ to చ్

Sandhyākṣaramulu means letters formed by the combination of two letters.
ఏ (e) is formed by the combination of అ (a) + ఇ (i)
ఓ (o) is formed by the combination of అ (a) + ఉ (u)
ఐ (ai) is formed by the combination of అ (a) + ఏ (e)
ఔ (au) is formed by the combination of అ (a) + ఓ (o)
Because they are born from the union of two sounds, they are called sandhyākṣaramulu (junction letters/twilight letters).
సంధ్యక్షరములు (sandhyākṣaramulu) are vowels formed by the fusion of two simple vowels. They are called "sandhi" (junction) vowels because they represent the meeting point of two sounds.
The word సంధి (sandhi) means:
- Junction
- Meeting point
- Twilight (the junction between day and night)
Just as twilight is neither fully day nor fully night, these vowels are neither the first sound nor the second — they are a blended form.

| Type | Vowels | Telugu Term | Formation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple vowels | అ ఆ ఇ ఈ ఉ ఊ ఋ ౠ ఌ | సరళ స్వరములు | Single sound |
| Junction vowels | ఏ ఓ ఐ ఔ | సంధ్యక్షరములు | Combination of two sounds |
When two words combine in Sanskrit/Telugu, sandhi rules create these junction vowels:
రామ + ఇంద్రుడు = రామేంద్రుడు
- రామ (rāma) ends in అ
- ఇంద్రుడు (indruḍu) starts with ఇ
- Combined: రామేంద్రుడు (rāmendruḍu) — Rāma and Indra
హిమ + ఉదయము = హిమోదయము
- హిమ (hima) ends in అ
- ఉదయము (udayamu) starts with ఉ
- Combined: హిమోదయము (himodayamu) — rise of snow/cold
మత + ఏక్యము = మతైక్యము
- మత (mata) ends in అ
- ఏక్యము (ekyamu) starts with ఏ
- Combined: మతైక్యము (mataikyamu) — unity of opinion
మహ + ఓజస్ = మహౌజస్
- మహ (maha) ends in అ
- ఓజస్ (ojas) starts with ఓ
- Combined: మహౌజస్ (mahaujas) — great energy
Simple Vowels (9):
అ ఆ ఇ ఈ ఉ ఊ ఋ ౠ ఌ
↓
When combined through sandhi:
↓
Junction Vowels (4):
ఏ = అ + ఇ
ఓ = అ + ఉ
ఐ = అ + ఏ
ఔ = అ + ఓ
- Understanding word formation — Many compound words use sandhi
- Pronunciation — Knowing the components helps with correct pronunciation
- Etymology — Understanding root words by breaking down sandhi
- Pāṇini's rules — Many sūtras specifically deal with sandhi vowels
- Metre in poetry — Sandhi affects syllable count in chandas
Break down these words into their sandhi components:
| Word | Component 1 | Component 2 | Junction vowel |
|---|---|---|---|
| దేవేంద్రుడు (devendruḍu) | దేవ + | ఇంద్రుడు | ఏ |
| గణేశుడు (gaṇeśuḍu) | గణ + | ఈశుడు | ఏ |
| పరమోన్నతము (paramonnatamu) | పరమ + | ఉన్నతము | ఓ |
| మహైశ్వర్యము (mahaiśvaryamu) | మహ + | ఐశ్వర్యము | ఐ |
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| సవర్ణము savarṇamu | Same-class sounds | అ and ఆ are savarna |
| స్వరసంధి svarasandhi | Vowel sandhi | అ + ఇ = ఏ |
| హల్సంధి halsandhi | Consonant sandhi | త్ + చ = చ్చ |
| విసర్గసంధి visargasandhi | Visarga sandhi | రామః + అత్ర = రామోऽత్ర |
సంధ్యక్షరములు (Sandhyākṣaramulu) are the four junction vowels:
- ఏ (e) = అ + ఇ
- ఓ (o) = అ + ఉ
- ఐ (ai) = అ + ఏ
- ఔ (au) = అ + ఓ
They are formed when two simple vowels meet at word boundaries through sandhi (phonetic combination) rules. Understanding these is essential for:
- Reading Sanskrit compound words
- Applying sandhi rules correctly
- Understanding Pāṇini's grammar
- Proper pronunciation and metre in poetry

| Length | Name | Symbol | Example with అ | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short | హ్రస్వ hrasva | none | రమ rama | ra-ma |
| Long | దీర్ఘ dīrgha | ː or ा | రామ rāma | rā-ma hold 2 beats |
| Pluta | ప్లుత pluta | ³ or 3 | రామ3 rāma³ | rā-māā hold 3 beats |
In the Māheshvarā Sūtras context: When the book says "ఊర్ధ్వ భాగమున 3 తో చూపబడును" (in the upper part, indicated with 3), it means:
"The pluta (triple-length) form is shown by writing a 3 above or after the vowel in the ūrdhva bhāga (upper section/superscript position)"
Try it: Say "Rāmāāā!" like you're calling someone across a field — that's pluta!
What are Savarnas
సవర్ణము (savarṇamu) means "of the same class" or "homogeneous" — specifically referring to sounds that share the same place of articulation.
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| స sa | With, same |
| వర్ణము varṇamu | Letter, sound, color, class |
సవర్ణము (savarṇa) refers to vowels or consonants that belong to the same phonetic category.
| Short | Long | Pluta | All are savarna same class |
|---|---|---|---|
| అ a | ఆ ā | అ3 a³ | All a class vowels |
| ఇ i | ఈ ī | ఇ3 i³ | All i class vowels |
| ఉ u | ఊ ū | ఉ3 u³ | All u class vowels |
అ and ఆ are savarna — they are the same sound, just different lengths.
అ and ఇ are NOT savarna — they are different vowel classes.
అకః సవర్ణే దీర్ఘః (akaḥ savarṇe dīrghaḥ)
This famous sūtra means:
When a vowel (ak) is followed by its savarna (same-class vowel), the result is the long form (dīrgha)
Examples:
- అ + అ = ఆ (a + a = ā)
- ఇ + ఇ = ఈ (i + i = ī)
- ఉ + ఉ = ఊ (u + u = ū)
This is a sandhi rule — how sounds combine in Sanskrit.
Consonants from the same varga (row) are also savarna:
| Varga | Consonants | All savarna |
|---|---|---|
| క-వర్గము ka-varga | క ఖ గ ఘ ఙ | All gutturals |
| చ-వర్గము cha-varga | చ ఛ జ ఝ ఞ | All palatals |
| ట-వర్గము ṭa-varga | ట ఠ డ ఢ ణ | All cerebrals |
| త-వర్గము ta-varga | త థ ద ధ న | All dentals |
| ప-వర్గము pa-varga | ప ఫ బ భ మ | All labials |
క and ఖ are savarna (both gutturals)
క and చ are NOT savarna (different places of articulation)
Many sandhi rules and grammatical operations in Sanskrit apply only when sounds are savarna — when they belong to the same phonetic class.
In short: సవర్ణము = same class/category of sound (same place of articulation or same vowel type)
