- Role/Class: Nightsister (Defected) / Support / Seer
- Appearance: A 5’5” older woman, with braided white hair down to the middle of her back. Withered and old but with a presence of steel. She has violet eyes, and black tattoos on her face and arms that have been redone to look like flowering vines.
A woman steeped in ideals and built by tradition and virtues. Brought up in a secluded cult and indoctrinated from a small age. However, she had a shock that shook her ideals and forced her to re-evaluate all that she knew. This is her story of learning and proving that no matter how steeped you are in your ways, change is possible.
Varda was born on Dathomir and taken by the Nightsisters after a raid on her home village. They shaped her, and she grew strong in the Force, becoming a powerful and feared seer. She reveled in her power until she met a man named Oloric, with whom she had a daughter, Vallah. This love softened her and created a conflict with her coven's dark ways.
This conflict culminated in a disaster where she was forced to kill Oloric to save their daughter. Hollowed by grief, she distanced herself from her coven. Years later, she was roused by the Force to save her daughter during childbirth. She staged a battle, striking her daughter non-fatally to sever her from the coven, and fled with her newborn grandson, Lyrus.
She raised Lyrus for ten fleeting years until he was torn from her life by unknown means. Now, she wanders the galaxy, no longer a Nightsister, seeking to find her grandson and walk a new path between the light and the dark.
A gnarled but elegant staff fashioned from a single, resilient piece of an unknown Atollon wood. The wood itself feels ancient, humming with a strange Force signature that is neither light nor dark, but a balance of both—"warmth kissed by shadow, clarity wrapped in mist." Varda has painstakingly carved its surface with symbols that are personal to her philosophy: jagged lines representing twilight, spirals evoking a gathering storm, and a single, unblinking eye that represents "the eye that sees in stillness." Inlaid into the heart of the staff are three rings of polished beskar, a gift from her Mandalorian friend, Araden Kryz. Each ring serves as a focus for one of the staff's core properties: endurance, clarity, and balance.
As a weapon, the staff can be wielded as a Quarterstaff.
- The Ring of Endurance: The beskar's resilience allows Varda to draw on deep reserves, shaking off debilitating effects. Once per day, Varda can use the staff to perform a special version of the Recover action as a Standard Action. When she does, she moves +2 steps up the Condition Track instead of the usual +1.
- The Ring of Clarity: The ancient Atollon wood helps to focus the mind, piercing through deception. Once per encounter, as a swift action, Varda can focus her will through the staff to gain a +5 equipment bonus on the next Perception or Sense Motive check she makes before the end of her turn.
- The Ring of Balance: The staff's unique Force signature helps Varda center herself against the chaotic energy she contains. Once per day, when Varda uses a Force Power and would be subject to the backlash from her Pain of Effort wound, she can use the Ring of Balance to automatically succeed on the Fortitude save to resist the effect, taking no steps down the Condition Track.
The event that led to your long slumber left a permanent scar, not just on your body, but on your very connection to the Force. There is a constant, low-grade pain deep in your bones, a cold spot in your soul that never truly warms. It serves as a perpetual reminder of a terrible price paid.
Your own power is no longer a gentle stream; it is a raging river that you must constantly fight to contain. Every time you call upon it, you risk a backlash—a sharp jolt of pain that can leave you staggering and weak as the raw energy strains against your control. Furthermore, your second sight, once a source of clarity, is now like looking through a cracked lens; visions are often clouded, tinged with pessimism and the worst possible outcomes. The Force still speaks to you, but its voice is now often accompanied by a dark, misleading whisper.
Most disturbingly, you carry a well of raw, chaotic power within you from that day—a dark and tempting reservoir. You can choose to stop fighting it for a moment and unleash a surge of incredible power, but you know the cost is severe. Dipping into that well exhausts your body and feeds the darkness, pulling you ever further from the balanced path you seek to walk.
This condition represents a permanent spiritual wound with the following effects:
-
Pain of Effort: Immediately after Varda uses a Force Power, the contained dark energy makes an attack against her own Fortitude Defense with an attack bonus of
d20 + {Varda::level} + 2
. If the attack hits, she moves -1 step down the Condition Track (this is a normal penalty, removable by the Recovery action). - Tainted Senses: Varda suffers a persistent -2 penalty on all Use the Force checks made to perceive the world through non-visual means (e.g., Sense Surroundings, Farseeing).
Dark Surge: By embracing the chaos within, Varda can unleash a moment of incredible power at a great personal cost.
- Benefit: Once per encounter, as a Swift Action, Varda can gain a +5 Force Bonus to the next Use the Force check she makes.
- Cost: She immediately gains 1 Dark Side Point and moves -1 step down the Condition Track. This is a normal penalty and can be removed via the Recovery action.
