Windows installation steps for sdrpp for the RTL-SDR USB dongle

Download Zadig: https://github.com/pbatard/libwdi/releases/download/v1.4.1/zadig-2.7.exe

You will need to have an RTL-SDR USB dongle to plug in to do the next two steps. Run Zadig. Do not click randomly in this application or things might stop working on your computer! Look for the digits

in theUSB ID
field. If you see this, go to the next step. If not, go underOptions
and make sureList All Devices
is checked. If you still don't see the digits2838
in theUSB ID
field, in the dropdown menu, selectBulk-In, Interface (Interface 0)
. Now you should see the digits2838
in theUSB ID
field.
- Look at the field to the right of the green arrow. It should say
WinUSB
. If it does, click once theReplace Driver
button and wait 30 seconds. You may get a warning from Windows. Once it is done, the button will change toReinstall Driver
You can close Zadig as you no longer need it.

Download the SDR++ (sdrpp) application https://github.com/AlexandreRouma/SDRPlusPlus/releases/download/1.0.4/sdrpp_windows_x64.zip)

Unzip the files of the sdrpp_windows_x64.zip file

Download and copy this file into the sdrpp_windows_x64 folder frequency_manager_config.json

Run the SDR++ (sdrpp) application

In the Source menu, it says
Airspy
. Use the dropdown menu to selectRTL-SDR
orRTL-SDR USB

Click on the Play button (triangle button at the top left). You should hear static and see movement in the waterfall. if you have any kind of antenna plugged into the RTL-SDR, you should see some FM stations.

Move the Gain slider to about three quarters - the field is the unlabeled row with a number (probably 0.0) beneath the
PPM Correction
field. The FM signals should get much bigger.
- Check the box
IQ Correction
- Set the frequency to 434.9 MHz (
434.900.000
is the displayed value in Hz) and the mode toNFM
and you should see and hear your CubeSatSim if it is transmitting. You can use the top verticalZoom
slider on the right side of the screen to zoom in. Click to center the signal.
Adjust the Max and Min sliders on the right side of the screen so the background is blue
- Scroll down on the left side to find the
Frequency Manager
. You will see various frequencies listed. If you double click on them, it will tune this frequency and set the correct mode. For example, clicking on NOAA PHL will tune the National Weather Service broadcast:
