Home - alan-mushi/opencpn-low-energy GitHub Wiki

This wiki contains all the related documentation on an enhancement of the OpenCPN navigation program. Our enhancement will look for how to reduce the energy consumption when OpenCPN is used for a navigation situation.

This project is cut as follow :

At this point the project "shift". We couldn't reduce enough the power consumption of OpenCPN, so we decided to build our own Linux distribution based on OpenSUSE with the SUSE Studio tool.

This distribution is now available ! All enhancements to reduce the power consumption explained in this wiki are included by default (except powertop advices, we're still working on that).

You can find the distribution home page here, we advise you to download the 0.2.0 version.

Here is a comparison between our distribution in version 0.2.0 (regular and with powertips still under development) and the official OpenSUSE distribution. We set-up the official OpenSUSE distribution with LXDE.

Comparison of our distribution and the official one

Just to clarify, the official distribution consume almost 11 Watt while in the same context our distribution consume only 8 Watt (with powertips and auto mode for USB). The real difference is when xscreensaver displays the screen saver, the official distribution stays at 11 Watt while our distribution drops to 4,30 Watt (still with powertips and auto mode for USB)!

In addition, while the official distribution takes 3.8 GB right after the installation, our distribution only takes 2 GB !
