Organisation Structure/Type

  • Not-for profit / Charity type thing -- think Non-Profit is the way to go here says @oisin

Access and Membership

  • members only
  • open

Charges (Decision for later):

  • Formal membership? Derived from (modest) fees?
  • Usage: pay per use?

@antonwhalley says:

I think they should be upfront formal membership deducted by the amount of devices provided. Non-members should be able to avail of the service but at a premium and based on there usage time.

#Location/Hosting

I suspect this will evolve. Day 1 it might be a library at someone's desk and as popularity increases we could have a dedicated physical space.

Options for space:

  • device library in a bag (day 1)
  • device library in a donated space - science gallery, nci incubation center, popular co-working places, aman's place of work
  • migrate to popular place

@oisin says:

The Irish Floating Mobile Device Library? Targeting a secure space is an important goal, as is supervision of the space. Potentially over 50k worth of devices could be in one spot at the one time.

@antonwhalley says:

This should be a some form of dedicated facility day 1

Physical access to devices

  • pre-booking? reservation type system?
  • devices can only be used close to the device library

@oisin says:

Uncomfortable about devices being removed from the space - think it would be a impediment to use

@antonwhalley says:

Agreed removal of devices should not be allowed. Booking system will be required but given the amount of devices and the nature of test this may be more than one organisation at a time. Google Calendar?

Population library of devices

  • donation/loans from member organizations
  • sponsorship - microsoft and google would be good to ask

@antonwhalley says:

The devices will have to be populated by funds as well.

Data access

  • will need Sims - look for sponsorship from telecos here.

@antonwhalley says:

I will enquire with our partners about this.

  • broadband access - most like dedicated/shared from host site, will need routers maybe

@oisin says:

Start from wifi only perhaps

Engaging with community

  • make library well known
  • keep it refreshed

@antonwhalley says:

Open days for other NFP orgs? coderdojo Cake, MMUG,GDG?

@dermdaly thoughts:

Why not-for-profit? If it were a co-op type of thing, then I get it; if it were for-profit, then it's in someone's interest to keep it going; As pointed out, it would manage significant value of equipment.

@oisin replies:

I think that a not-for-profit status will help in constructing a neutral governance approach and if it's going to be a multi-patron affair. If there's profit, everyone will want a cut of it, and the focus is to provide device availability to all, methinks.
