Introduction - ajsteele/mmcalc GitHub Wiki

MµCalc is a program for simulating the magnetic dipole fields inside crystals, and has been primarily developed to allow better interpretation of muon-spin relaxation (µ+SR) experiments.

In a µ+SR experiment, the muon acts as a microscopic magnetometer, returning the magnetic field it is experiencing wherever it is sat in the crystal. Unfortunately, the problem is not fully constrained since the precise position occupied by the muon is not known. Judicious interpretation of dipole field simulations, sometimes including use of Bayesian analysis, can constrain parameters of interest in systems under study in spite of this limitation.

This documentation acts as an introduction to both the software and dipole-field simulation. If you want to get off to a flying start, try working your way through the tutorial which should provide all you need to know to run simple dipole-field analyses. The rest of the manual explains the operation of specific parts of the program in more detail.
