Setting Up Price Alerts for Your Assets on Ledger Live - aidanonycz/Ledger-Article-Guides-09 GitHub Wiki

As of now, Ledger Live, the companion app for Ledger hardware wallets, does not have a built-in feature specifically designed to set custom price alerts for your assets directly within the app. However, it does offer some related functionality, and there are alternative methods to achieve what you’re looking for.

Here’s how you can approach setting up price alerts for your assets using Ledger Live and other tools:

Within Ledger Live

Ledger Live provides real-time price tracking and portfolio monitoring, but its notification features are limited. There’s a specific option called “Large Movers” available on the mobile version of Ledger Live, which alerts you to significant price fluctuations for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). Here’s how to enable it:

  1. Open Ledger Live Mobile: Launch the app on your phone.
  2. Navigate to Wallet: Tap the “Wallet” tab.
  3. Access Settings: Tap the gear icon in the top corner.
  4. Enable Large Movers: Scroll to the “Notifications” section, find “Large Movers,” and toggle it on.
  • What It Does: Once enabled, you’ll receive push notifications when BTC or ETH prices experience notable changes. However, this is limited to these two cryptocurrencies and doesn’t allow you to set custom price thresholds (e.g., alert me when BTC hits $50,000).
  • Limitations: This feature isn’t available on the desktop version, and it’s not customizable for specific prices or other assets.

For a broader range of assets or custom alerts, you’ll need to rely on third-party tools, as Ledger Live focuses more on secure asset management than advanced price alert customization.

Alternative Methods for Custom Price Alerts

Since Ledger Live doesn’t fully meet the need for detailed price alerts, here are some practical workarounds using external platforms that integrate well with your Ledger-managed assets:

  1. Crypto Exchanges or Trading Apps:
    • Examples: Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, or CoinMarketCap.
    • How to Use: Most major exchanges and crypto tracking apps allow you to set price alerts for any cryptocurrency they support. Sign up, add the assets you hold on your Ledger to a watchlist, and configure alerts (e.g., notify me when SOL reaches $200).
    • Steps:
      1. Download the app or visit the website.
      2. Create an account (if needed) and go to the price alert or notification settings.
      3. Select your asset, set your desired price point or percentage change, and choose your notification method (e.g., email, push notification).
    • Note: You don’t need to store funds on these platforms; just use them for tracking.
  2. Portfolio Trackers:
    • Examples: Blockfolio (now FTX), Delta, or CoinStats.
    • How to Use: These apps let you manually input your Ledger holdings or sync them via public addresses (without compromising your private keys). You can then set custom alerts.
    • Steps:
      1. Install the app and add your assets (e.g., BTC, ETH, SOL) by entering amounts or syncing public wallet addresses.
      2. Navigate to the alert settings and set specific price targets or percentage changes.
      3. Enable notifications via your phone or email.
    • Benefit: Tracks your entire portfolio alongside price movements.
  3. Dedicated Alert Tools:
    • Examples: TradingView, Crypto Pro.
    • How to Use: These platforms offer advanced charting and alert features. You can set alerts based on price levels, technical indicators, or market events for any asset.
    • Steps:
      1. Sign up and search for your assets.
      2. Use the alert feature to set conditions (e.g., “Alert me when XRP crosses $1”).
      3. Receive notifications via app, email, or SMS.

Why Ledger Live Doesn’t Offer Full Price Alerts

Ledger Live is primarily designed for secure asset management—sending, receiving, staking, and tracking balances—while keeping your private keys offline via your Ledger hardware wallet. Adding extensive price alert functionality might shift its focus from security and simplicity. Instead, Ledger relies on its community to use complementary tools for trading or market monitoring.

Tips for Success

  • Match Your Ledger Assets: Ensure the third-party tool supports the cryptocurrencies you hold on your Ledger (e.g., over 5,500 assets are compatible with Ledger Live).
  • Security First: Never input your Ledger private keys or recovery phrase into any third-party app. Use public addresses for tracking if needed.
  • Stay Updated: As of February 22, 2025, Ledger Live’s features evolve with updates, so check the official Ledger website or app for any new notification options.
