Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

⌛ status: not started >> PCB Design >> PCB fabrication >> Component assembly >> Testing

The open hardware electronics being designed and prototyped will have the capability and will be compatible with common cheap Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems sold on common e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, eBay, or any other, for instance, this one here sold on AliExpress. This means to install a TPMS in a car, is needed the 4x tire pressure sensors and a simple & easy reconfiguration of the car's electronics to add the tire pressure information to the Instruments cluster, Infotainment systems, and safety systems such as ABS and STC/ DSTC. The main objective is to enable installation at any tire replacement shop or mechanic. Alternatively as a DIY job.

If you like this project and want faster development, prototyping, and testing consider a donation or sponsoring the project. Alternatively, one can buy and donate a TPMS to help and speed up the design of new open hardware electronics, prototype, and testing. Send me an email to [email protected] to know more. Include in the subject "open electronics for Volvo p2". Thank you 🙏.

What are the Different Types of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems 1

1 Source: https://www.goodyear.com

There are three main types of tire pressure monitoring systems offered today:

  • Direct TPMS: Direct systems monitor the pressure and temperature from within the tire using actual sensors to communicate with the vehicle's on-board receiver.
  • Indirect TPMS: Indirect systems do not use a physical pressure sensor within the wheel to monitor the individual pressure, but in fact use the vehicle's ABS system to measure the rotational speeds of each tire. Minor tire pressure differences can cause one or more of the tires to rotate at a different rate than the others which is detected by the system and will cause the TPMS light to turn on. Defective wheel speed sensors or driving in slippery conditions can also cause the TPMS light to turn on with this type of system.
  • Hybrid TPMS: Internal tire sensors work in conjunction with wheel speed sensors to help tell the driver (via a dashboard indicator) which tire is underinflated.
