revision 03-2024
The main EMS microcontroller is the EspressIF Systems ESP32 S3 microcontroller a dual core Xtensa LX7 Core Processor running at 240MHz with 512Kb RAM and of 8MB PSRAM. This is the main MCU that is responsible to do real-time engine management of a vehicle. This hardware revision will be made to fit engines with up to 12 cylinders with an option to run bi-fuel systems such as LPG, each with its own engine map configuration. This hardware revision is a totally new PCB design and a direct replacement of factory ECus found on P2 Volvos. Currently is being fabricated the first prototype boards for later being tested.
revision 12-2023
To design the very first revision (12-2023) for my open hardware electronics ECU I'll be using what is already available on the open communities in particular the Speeduino project (see its GitHub repository here). Their open hardware ECU solution is a flexible, fully featured Engine Management System (EMS aka ECU) based on the low-cost and open source Arduino platform. It provides the hardware, firmware, and software components that make up an engine management system, all provided under open licenses. With over 1000 installations, Speeduino has matured into a product that meets the needs of the hobbyist and enthusiast community without driving prices to the levels of traditional aftermarket ECUs.
The main MCU, the MK64FX512VMD12 from NXP, is a Kinetis® K64 MCU, Based on Arm® Cortex®-M4 Core, running at 120 MHz and it has 256KB of SRAM (also found on the Teensy 3.5). This is the main MCU that is responsible to do real-time engine management of a vehicle. The first hardware revision will be made to fit engines with up to 8 cylinders with an option to run bi-fuel systems such as LPG, each with its engine map configuration. This hardware revision was replaced by revision 03-2024 and it was never tested, however, it is almost a duplicate of the DropBear ECU by Speeduino. It is now available on the KiCad OPEN ECU Folder for anyone to download and use on their projects.
