The knock sensor is a +5V 2-wire piezoelectric unit, where the concussion of ignition induces a voltage that steadily increases as the crank gets closer to firing at TDC (=bad). The ECU reads this and adjusts the timing. A failed Knock Sensor will often have no noticeable symptoms beyond a check engine light or engine ping or knock, but it does cause your Volvo S60 to operate inefficiently and produce higher emissions.
