Instruments Cluster

  To run the Instruments Cluster, I'll be using EspressIF Systems ESP32 C3 microcontroller a single core Xtensa LX7 Core Processor running at 160MHz with 400Kb RAM. This MCU has wireless radio capabilities that are disabled on the hardware electronics itself for safety concerns.

  In regards to safety against theft the electronics will include a cryptographic IC that will be used to match the car owner's VIN number and with all other open hardware electronic components installed on a vehicle. In practical terms, this means, that in the event of theft, to make a specific open hardware work on another vehicle, will require the replacement of the main microcontroller processing unit without the need for specialized tools and equipment. How to Retrofit an R Style Instruments Cluster

To retrofit an R Style Instruments Cluster with the blue dial gauges you will need:

  • 4x R-style blue gauge dials
  • 4x M3 Standoff Spacers with 12mm height sold on AliExpress (see here) (models up to 2004)
  • The 4x LED retro Illumination add-ons below (models up to 2004)

The gauge dials are being sold as a kit, meaning, the buyer will have to do soldering and component assembly, and there's also the option of fully assembled and ready to be installed on the buyer's dashboard dials. Don't forget to view the LED add-on for the rear back doors.
