Clutch Starter Safety Switch Position Sensor

Figure 1- Clutch Position Sensor (Factory Orignal)

This is a +5V, 2-wire sensor. This +5V sensor is used to measure linear or rotary displacement in various applications. For manual transmissions, it is used for the clutch position on the master cylinder or the clutch release bearing. It can also be used at the gearshift lever to detect all gears' positions.

The factory's original sensor is infamous for wearing overtime resulting in poor functioning of the overall electronics of a P2 Volvo car causing frequent error messages. This is one of a total of 3 sensors P2 cars suffer from abnormal wear and poor performance (the ETM and the Accelerator pedal are the other 2). The solution prototyped will solve this annoying problem definitely.

The hardware electronic being designed and prototyped is for a direct replacement of the carbon-based sensor inside the "Clutch Starter Safety Switch" with a laser position sensor the VL8160X from ST Microelectronics.
