Research Sustainable Food Consumption - adrienerice/The_Chosen_Ones GitHub Wiki

Background

The transformation from food to waste is a phenomenon deeply rooted in daily practice. Existing practical applications in the field of ecologically sustainable food culture usually aim to achieve sustainable food purchases through more sustainable consumption, such as regional and organic products or supporting urban gardening communities, with or without technology applied.

Therefore, food waste gradually began to gain some attention in human-computer interaction and Ubicomp. To investigate the usefulness of refrigerator interventions, a study used a low-tech refrigerator color code method to support the understanding of available foods. The study showed that during the one-month study period, the waste of participants was reduced than before.

Ganglbauer (2013) stated that wasted food is mainly a result of a society where over-production of food is predominant and the practice of over-buying by consumers and individuals is intended by the industry and the market, such as large packaging size. The success of bottom-up interventions such as the free food sharing community Foodsharing.de with more than 20.000 members points to the potentials of technology as a tool to support civic engagement and connect people and retailers to provide and collect food for free. However, many places do not have a similar platform and community, or they are unpopular to have that many users. so I am thinking about whether I can design a platform so that everyone can have the opportunity to share food, or at least to solve the problem of unnecessary food waste.
