Progress Update 1

What is this? It's a game thing. In space. You got a ship. There's conspiracy in the air. Go shoot stuff and make it better.

It will likely be from a 3rd person perspective, with a possible 1st person view. The idea was that what the player is seeing is some kind of tactical overview provided by the ship's systems. It will aggregate sensor data, scanner data, any stored information, and any incoming data streams and project a meaningful image of the surroundings. The view will only display things that you have detected or are tracking. Thermal anomalies may show up as such. A sun may flare out any scans or ladar in a certain direction. Objects blocking radiation may give you clues that something is there.

Much of the game will revolve around information and stealth. Communications are key. Detection is key. The best way to avoid being killed is to not get shot at at all. Jamming, hiding heat emissions, avoiding scanning, visual stealth systems, and more will be vital.

I imagine much combat will revolve around who can find the enemy first, and trying to judge if you could win in an engagement. Ladar scanning could reveal your location. Communications broadcasts could reveal your location. Accelerating or going FTL could reveal your location. Launching missiles, or firing certain weapons, or even just moving in front of a light source could reveal your location if your enemy is paying attention.

Of course, it wouldn't be wise to just jump into combat if you detect someone. They could have allies lying in wait for you to fall for their trap. What you've detected could be a decoy. Or someone could have hacked into your ship's systems and caused it to display incorrect information.

Identify friend/foe signals may be useful for some, but not so for others. Should you go in for stealth, or announce your presence? Which would work out best to ensure your survival? Intimidation or subterfuge? Stealth or combat? A mix of either?
