The Problem - Food Waste and Insecurity

Every year in America, between 30-40% of the food supply ends up as food waste. Food waste represents the single largest component entering local landfills. 1 Also every year in America, 40 million people, almost 12% of households, experience food insecurity. A food insecure household is defined as: "uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food". 2

This Solution

Share the Food aims to connect producers of food waste, with anyone who wants or needs food. Visit the website, and you can view nearby food donations as pins on a map or items in a list. Each donation has a location, allergen information for the 8 most common food allergens, and the option for one or many photos. In order to upload a donation, you must first create a free account. This is to ensure accountability with donations. Users can view their current active donations, as well as all past donations.
