> idolized grandfather (and his stories – including all his fathers in whose footsteps he followed) who were talented musicians/bards who played the flute or clarinet or recorder
> father was a lawman [the kind that drafts laws, desk job sort of deal]. He wanted nothing to do with his father/bardic stuff
> mother was a tinker [fixes things, builds knickknacks, works with mechanisms, invents some stuff])
> unfortunately awful/not gifted at playing woodwind instruments
>> tried and tried but couldn’t get it
> still went to college of lore even though didn’t seem to be very musically gifted
> did poorly in first year, except for lore class, still trying play flute
> second year the same
> teacher (halfling named Finnan Reedfellow) assigned to help me (since i was doing poorly) taught me fiddle instead much to my chagrin (and helped with my theory)
> a week before the end of year (graded) recital (which are free to the public and other students) I learned my grandfather was planning to attend so I switched my instrument to flute (secretly) and butchered the recital (much to the horror of my teacher) – very embarrassing.
> grandfather came in on my teacher severely berating me, and also berated me for not listening to my teacher and for trying to be something i wasn’t choosing the flute over the fiddle when it was obviously not the right instrument for me
> turns out grandfather knew my teacher (who was an exceptional fiddler) quite well and approved of me learning under him, and left with a stern rebuke to listen to my teacher
> things went much better for me at school after that – I learned a lot under my teacher and became a great fiddler and well versed in lore
> graduated school, and my graduation recital piece, written by myself of course, called “The Ballad of Bravric the Forgotten” became very popular
>> “The Ballad of Bravric the Forgotten” was a humourous tale about a gnomish hero whose exceptional, mundane heroics were outclassed by mediocre opponents who did less mundane heroics
(for example, Bravric saved the town of Hagersville who had been struck by a sudden severe drought by ingeniously inventing a windmill to pump clean potable water and building it himself in record time. However, the people of the town soon forgot his heroics when two third-rate adventurers stopped by soon after and rid the town of their “threatening and fearsome” neighbour goblins – which was really just three goblins minding their own business and not even harassing the town at all)
