Additional Resources

  • Applying to PhD Programs in Computer Science - Written by Prof. Mor Harchol-Balter from CMU. The abstract should tell you why this is helpful: "The author is a professor of computer science at CMU, and has been involved in the Ph.D. admissions process at CMU, U.C. Berkeley, and MIT." This is the first document I send to anybody who mentions they are interested in pursuing a PhD.
  • PhD Applications: FAQ - Written by Prof. Noah Smith who studies NLP at the University of Washington. Recent guide on applying to PhD programs in computer science. I used it as a reference when writing my applications. Especially helpful if you are interested in NLP!
  • Compiled Successful NSF GRFP Apps - This HUGE list of successful apps was compiled by Alex Lang. I heavily referenced many of the apps when writing my own GRFP and DoD apps. He also lists many more additional resources on the "Tips for Getting Started" section on this page of his site.
  • Master list of research internships and REUs that I have looked over or applied for. I also included a CV and some example personal statements for the applications in which I was successful.
  • CS PhD --help - List of resources for learning about, applying to, surviving and thriving within CS PhDs. Awesome collection of stories from wide variety of people!
  • Prof. Ravi Prakash (UTD) - Prof. Prakash has a bunch of NSF GRFP examples from UTD (successful as well as unsuccessful). You can go ahead and email him to request access to a Box folder with all of them. If you are in computer science, he may also look over drafts of your GRFP application if you ask him nicely! More :eyes: are always better.
