Systems Administrator - acmumn/officer-resources GitHub Wiki
You make the computer science club function - make sure it functions well!
Duties
Your duties include:
- Maintain the door access lists.
- Maintain the servers in the server closet
- Maintain the computers in the room that are available
- Maintain the internal network for members
- Monitor and log the network, make sure people are not torrenting or using our infrastructure inappropriately -- otherwise we will lose it for sure.
- Help with network design and setup for SDC, MinneHack and LAN Parties
Your duties do not include:
- The Website -- we have a webmaster for this
Door Access
New method:
Send an email to [email protected]
(his name is Aaron Connor) and CC [email protected]
with a space-seperated-values text document containing:
- Full Name
- U Card #
- Student ID #
- x500
Old method:
Going via HelpDesk can be a huge PITA... they are slow and sometimes apply the wrong list
Send an email to [email protected]
and CC [email protected]
with the updated members.txt
and a message of the following format.
Hi Operator,
I have added more people to the door list for 2-204.
Thanks,
Your Name, System Admin, ACM
SDC

There's pretty much nothing doing here.

Networking
We are given a subnet within the U of M's network and effectively allowed to do anything we want.
What we cannot do, and will be caught as we are behind Keller's packet inspection:
- Tor Exit Node
- Email Server
- Torrenting
- Any sort of large, consistent uploading
There is an "ACM Network" folder in the "ACM Files" Google Drive. Within there, there is an "ACM Network Addresses & HW Inventory" spreadsheet that shows the mappings between external IPs, DNS names, internal IPs, network services, and physical machines.
Irene Jacobson is the liaison between ACM and Keller Hall IT. She has helped defend our right to have a subnet over time, and helped us repeatedly with equipment and networking over the years. Be nice to her.
There's more info in the keybase team acmumn.devops
about the precise boring details of how the network is set up.
Hardware
There's info in the keybase team acmumn.officerish
for hardware inventory.
