Creating Marketing Posts for Papers
Posts to promote recently accepted papers (e.g.) comprise a plain-text, quickly-skimmable description of the paper and an optional (but recommended!) pull-quote graphic.
A suggested process to generate posts (~10-15min per paper):
- Read, at a minimum, the abstract, intro, and conclusion. Read or skim methods/data. This is important to make sure the generated text is accurate.
- Prompt Claude/ChatGPT to generate three suggested social media posts from the PDF. It is important to have a paid subscription so you can turn off training.
- Usually none of these posts are accurate -- in particular they usually focus on only one aspect of the paper rather than the work as a whole. But having read the paper, you can combine parts of each suggested post to get something that's accurate and represents the work as a whole.
- Grab a quote from the abstract, introduction, or conclusion. The GenAI prompt below will attempt to find one, but it is usually not a real quote. Put the quote in this Canva template. Export as PNG.
Before anything is posted, we must clear the post with an author. After an author approves the post, we schedule it on Buffer. We also reply encouraging them to follow us on social media so they can repost it.
GenAI Prompt
I am creating social media posts advertising recently published articles in ACM Transactions on Computing Education (TOCE).
The journal publishes high quality, peer-reviewed research articles on all aspects of computing education of interest to computing education researchers, computing educators, instructional designers, teacher educators, school administrators, policy makers, and other stakeholders.
The social media posts will each feature a particular article, and will include a summary of the key findings and/or takeaways from the work + an engaging graphic related to the takeaways of the article.
For the attached paper, please generate three drafts of a social media post to advertise it. Additionally, provide three examples of a short quote from the paper which could be used in an image to go along with the post.
Initial Email
Hi [author first names],
I'm one of the associate editors for ACM Transactions on Computing Education. We're starting a new initiative to promote papers on our social media channels, to help boost the visibility of the work we publish (and ultimately increase the impact of the journal).
We would like to feature your recent work on our social media: [Paper DL link]
If you are ok with us promoting your paper, can you please review the following description and let me know if it appears correct or, if not, what edits you want made?
