Lab 02 ‐ DNS ADDS Role - aaralik1/SYS-255 GitHub Wiki

In today's lab, I learned a quite a few things from Active Directory to DNS and many more! This lab's purpose was to set up the active directory as well as a new domain that the workstation and active directory can be under. We started off by using an application called Server Manager which I have never used in my life before. I changed the Ethernet settings by adding the new IP address, subnet mask, the default gateway, and DNS. Moving on, I then I had to select Active Directory Domain Services and the installation process began. One thing I learned from this lab that I liked a lot was the term "forest." It stands for a set of domain trees that are connect but aren't sharing a single name. I got to make my own and this was one of my favorite parts of the lab! Next, I learned the difference between Local Administrator vs. Domain Administrator and the main distinction for it is that domains have power everything within active directory, however, local administrators have power over only a single Windows that is not within the active directory. Furthermore, for the first time ever, I got to explore Forward Lookup Zone and Reverse Lookup Zone in which I had to create my own resource record with the host domain name and IP address included. In addition, I got to add a new user to the computer by using Active Directory Users and Computers and one of the users had admin privileges while the other one didn't. Next, I had to change the DNS IP on my workstation so I manually changed that by accessing control panel, going to network and ethernet settings. Moving on, I later had to switch my workstation to the domain so that it wasn't part of the workgroup anymore. I then restarted the workstation and accessed the account with new credentials and @mydomainname. Overall, this lab was pretty exciting and I was able to learn more about how active directory, dns, forests, Forward Lookup Zone and Reverse Lookup Zones work. I had an easier time following up with the steps in the lab and I had more confidence in myself when it comes to troubleshooting and problem solving!
