Smart Surveillance with Motion Sensing

Introduction

This is a project for Hackathon that we are working on in our IoT/Robotics group. We are going to use raspberry pi, a motion sensor, and a camera in order to build a smart surveillance system for anyone who wants to boost their security. This project will be able to detect motion, create an alert when there is motion, and also take a picture or video recording whenever the motion detector goes off.

Motivation

The motivation for this project is to help people in need with software and technology. Being able to bring positive changes to someone’s life through computer science is the most impactful and satisfying way to use our knowledge and we thought this project would be perfect with the little experience and resources that we have. This project will increase the overall security and safety of people that are in need of it.

Significance

This project will allow anyone to have extra security over their belongings. Surveillance over one’s belongings is a huge issue in places where people are stealing packages from the front of homes. Having a system that can take a picture or record the event that can help identify that would-be thief.

Goals and Objectives

The goal is to increase overall safety for anyone who wants more security and convenience in their lives. Our objective is to detect motion and then take a picture/video whenever the motion detector goes off and then send the image/video to an email.

Features

Notifications – Give an email alert whenever the motion sensor goes off and camera takes a picture. Motion Sensor – Detect any kind of movement that is happening. Surveillance Camera – Take photos/videos whenever motion sensor goes off. Proposed Methodology We are going to review all of our previous ICP’s and then work on putting together the hardware first. Once we have tested the hardware and make sure everything is working properly, we will work on the code. Once the code is tested and working well, then we will make sure the whole project is working to our satisfaction.

Implementation

We are going to use raspberry pi, different libraries, python, a PIR motion detector, and a camera. We will be putting together the hardware and then pushing code.

Applications

Surveillance camera to increase security. You can put it wherever you need extra security like on your porch for example if you have problems with package thieves.

Conclusions

We will be adding our conclusion once we actually finish the project.
