Ending states - ZIL-Collaborations/Witness-the-Prequel GitHub Wiki
The game ends when the doorbell rings and Phong opens the door to admit The Detective, at 8:0x pm. Then there's a bunch of tests on whether the player did all the critical path steps, and that determines the ending they get, ranging from "something-something you've lined everything up to perfection. Just another hour or so, he'll be dead, and Stiles will take the fall." to an ending that explains that the plot didn't go according to plan for XYZ reason.
Immediate game-ending conditions would include:
- Shooting Linder directly.
- Shooting yourself.
- Shooting Phong (meh?)
- Pressing the repaired butler button with the cordite in place but no gun installed. (It shatters the window, ruining the plot.) First draft checked in.
- Pressing the repaired butler button with the gun installed. (Initial aim: it makes a hole in the wall, ruining the plot. Adjusted aim: it kills Monica.) First draft checked in.
Distinct types of epilogue (there may be sub-variations):
- Everything's as good as it can be! Epilogue talks about the upcoming swerve to go see a picture with Terry, heart racing but gotta look cool, etc. etc.
- Monica basically does nothing at all to advance the plot. (Something along the lines of "welp, you decided to let him live, he embarrassedly sends the detective home and reluctantly pays Stiles off, but you never see eye to eye boo hoo")
- Monica forgets to rig up the gun correctly (either the button isn't connected, or the gun wasn't re-aimed.) Epilogue talks about the shock you experience coming home to find the house quiet and everybody in it still alive.
- Monica sets up the clock correctly, but hasn't dealt fully with the non-canon incriminating evidence, like the to-do list. (Alludes to nagging doubt or something like that?)
