Spawning and taming

Macaws are common spawns in wet rainforest (scarlet, green-winged, blue and gold, chestnut-fronted), dry rainforest (hyacinth, red-fronted), dry forest (spix, military, blue-throated) biomes. They always spawn in flocks of 1-4 animals. Male and females are equally likely to spawn, and are not sexually dimorphic.

The macaw is a fast, neutral animal; they are wary of the player and will flee from them on sight until cornered or captured.

Macaws can be tamed with herbivore kibble.

Care

Macaws have 5 hearts (10 points) of health, can deal 0.5 hearts (1 points) of damage, and drop small meat and 2 feathers upon death.

Macaws are small, neutral animals with modest food needs. They eat a frugivore diet, consisting of fruit, seeds and grain.

Macaws can use the perching blocks, scented ball, tire swing, hanging browse, sprinkler, puzzle feeder, and apple ice treat enrichment items.

Macaws are a low fertility species, and can be bred with melon seeds. As small-sized animals they have a gestation time of 40000 ticks, and lay 1-3 eggs. Their chicks will take 3 1/3 minecraft days to reach adulthood.

Exhibit building

(note: exhibit building sections contain a mix of gameplay information and building advice. Not all recommendations are necessary to keep animals happy, fed, and watered, but can help players build a realistic enclosure.)

Macaws are presumably one of the easiest species to build for, being “just a bird” - in actuality, it's quite the contrary! Macaws require a multitude of items and opportunities to thrive in a captive habitat. Unfortunately, Macaws fall victim to the exotic pet trade, so the player may choose to dedicate additional time to educating the visitor about the horrors of the exotic pet trade, and even feature their Macaws as “rescues”.

Macaws are great birds for interspecies enrichment opportunities - They can thrive with many ZAWA & Addon animals, including the Giant Anteater, Hawk Headed Parrot, Guinea Pig & Spider Monkey. It's always a wonderful sight to see a flock of macaws in a large “rainforest dome” alongside a plethora of South American Animals. However, the player must ensure that space requirements and opportunities to fly and forage are essential as well.

Keepers should ensure the birds have access to plenty of enrichment and an array of nesting opportunities: branches, vines and perches are great enrichment opportunities for Macaws and other birds that share the habitat. Many keepers also choose to use the Pedestal Feeders as a source of food and water for their macaws, however items such as the Wall Bowl are generally a good idea.
