Giraffes are a large species of hoof-stock found across Africa.

With 4 newly classified species, these giants are a zoo staple, found in almost every large and small scale AZA & BIAZA zoo. Similar to other African savannah species, the giraffe unfortunately falls fate to the poaching trade & habitat destruction, with multiple species listed as "endangered".

Spawning and taming

Giraffes are uncommon spawns in wet savanna (reticulated, masai and southern) and dry savanna (northern) biomes. They always spawn in herds of 3-5 animals. Male and females are equally likely to spawn, and are not sexually dimorphic.

The giraffe is a medium speed, neutral animal; they are aware of the player, but generally unbothered by their presence unless their young are attacked.

Giraffes can be tamed with herbivore kibble.

Care

Giraffes have 35 hearts (70 points) of health, can deal 0 hearts of damage, and drop 3 large meat, 2 bones, and 4 leather upon death.

Giraffes are giant animals with massive food needs. They eat a herbivore diet, consisting of diverse fruit, vegetables and roughage.

Giraffes can use the scratching post, hanging browse, sprinkler, salt lick, and apple ice treat enrichment items.

Giraffes are a high fertility species, and can be bred with acacia leaves. As giant-sized animals they have a gestation time of 88000 ticks, and give birth to 1 calf that will take 7 1/3 minecraft days to reach adulthood.

Exhibit building

(note: exhibit building sections contain a mix of gameplay information and building advice. Not all recommendations are necessary to keep animals happy, fed, and watered, but can help players build a realistic enclosure.)

Giraffes are a key example of group animals - herds of up to 14 are a sight on the savannah, and are shown in similar sized family herds within zoos and safari parks.

Players should be building exhibits large enough to house a group, with space for other hoofstock as well. In the wild, Giraffes share the savannah with a multitude of species - this may be replicated within player zoos: with zebra, antelope, rhinos, wildebeest and even vultures being kept alongside them, a form of interspecies enrichment, benefitting both giraffe and other animals.

Zebras need a similar amount of space, similar landscaping, and are large enough to not be bullied. Relying on space availability, larger, multi species exhibits are a great idea for these guys. Giraffes do not jump or climb fences, however fences are essential for a safe environment.

Giraffes are herbivorous animals, trees and grasses are necessary for a functional enclosure, however in most zoos, raised feeders, which can be made from ZAWA original blocks like Rope, Scratching Posts, Wall Forages & Wall Bowls!

Giving giraffes & other exhibit sharers lots of tall grass to hide in can improve their confidence. Grass, tall grass, Johnson grass and Elephant grass are all good options, but should be placed to not block visitors' line of sight. Shelter needs to be large enough to contain the herd comfortably, and usually offer not just visibility for visitors & shelter, but open up opportunities to display other smaller species within, such as Ring Tailed Lemurs & African Lake Cichlids.

Variants

Three species of giraffe are represented: Reticulated giraffe, Masai giraffe, Northern giraffe, and Southern giraffe.
