Some of the processing of LEO is necessarily non-trivial and involves the construction of intermediate tables, between the (processed) source datasets and derived datasets. We refer to these as technical datasets since they are not intended for general use, though they can occasionally prove useful, but as necessary to produce the derived datasets.

fft.spells

LEO contains a number of datasets which record the activities of individuals between a start date and an end date.

The fft.spells table, constructed by the fft.metrics.sql script, collapses datasets that record start and end dates of activities into continuous periods of time (spells) during which an individual was engaged in an activity.

The activities in scope are:

• School enrolments (based on entry and leaving dates)
• Further education learning (based on the start and end dates of learning aims)
• Higher Education enrolments
• Employment
• Receipt of benefits
