Downloads in Your Members are protected through inherited permissions, which sounds complicated but is actually quite simple. When a download is created and needs to be protected it is assigned an existing page. Who ever can access that page can access the download even though the link to the download might be on hundreds of pages.

Lets demonstrate how easy it is to add a download.

You might well already have done this but you need a page to associate the download with. Either write a dedicated one (maybe an instructions page for the download) or find within your existing pages a page that allows the account types (only the account types you want to access the download). For information on assigning account types to pages see protecting content tutorial. Next we need to add our download, make sure you have your download ready, then visit Content -> Download Manager

By default Your Members only allows certain types, but you can add more by clicking allowed extensions and adding the file extension.

To add a download click “Add Download”

Add a title, and if protecting the file remember that you must tick “Member only file”, followed by selecting the page/post you created selected in step 1.

Click Save and you’re done. The file uploads automatically.

When the file is uploaded its ID number is shown. Make a quick note of it. Then visit the page you want people to access the file from and making sure you are in code view in the editor. Use the following tags [ download#1 ] (remove spaces between brackets) where 1 is the number of your download. When a user with the right access rights visits the page they are presented with a file to download. If some one without the access rights goes to the page they see the private post message as defined in Your Members Messages.

Note: The download can be added to any page not just the one you associated it with, however if you delete the page associated with the download then the download is not accessible by anyone other than an Admin until re-associated with a new page

Downloads are managed from Content → Download Manager When you return you will see your download has now appeared on the list.

From here you can edit, delete, and make note of the download ID.
